Gaining access to the full Google Docs site - not mobile

Hi all,

I have been searching the posts, but I cannot find a way to access the "true" google docs site. It will ALWAYS change my address to docs.google.com/m - the mobile browser site.

You CANNOT edit your documents on the mobile site. Useless!!!

Does anybody have a fix or know of an App that will let me access my docs and EDIT them?

I paid for GoDocs and it doesn't seem to let me edit either, even in offline mode. (Also it totally jacks my fonts up when I download them to offline storage)

Please help if possible. Or is there another browser App that would let me do this.

Other than this one issue, I am loving my iPad.

Wow this is awful if true. I want to get one, but I need to be able to use Google Docs on it.

When you first login to googledocs at the bottom you can click desktop instead of mobile. It allows me to make the changes to the spreadsheet on their by touching the cell i needed to change.

Has anyone had the problem with scrolling to the right in large spreadsheet documents? It doens't seem to work.

I can edit what I can see...but anything outside of what initially fits on the screen is not accessible. It really sucks as this was one of my main reasons for buying the iPad.

Even if I try the desktop version, I can't edit my individual documents, they open in a new mobile window.

If anyone has been able to edit google documents (not spreadsheets) please give us step by step instructions, because just clicking desktop version initially doesn't get you all the way there.

Remember how Apple shut-off access to iTunes for Palm Pre owners shortly after it was released?

Can anyone else see Apple doing the same to G-Docs users - in order to push people towards iWork apps?

I bet SJ would have a valid arguement re "confusing the end user" and platform stability....

what do you think?

If Apple makes user pick between Google and Apple products I, for one, will be flumoxed.

Nope, don't see that happening. This is not a "Apple" fixable problem.

This is the Google Docs site that is seeing the mobile version of Safari in the User Agent string and not recognizing it is actually the iPad w/a full web browser.

I am sure it will get fixed at some point. But, as of now, I agree it is annoying.

Well I was bothered about this at first but then downloaded Pages. Now I'm happy with it, so loosing editing in Google Docs doesn't bother me. Google isn't in a big hurry to fix their software to run correctly on the iPad. I also switched to Netvibes from Google Reader, which doesn't run correctly on the iPad either.

get GoodReader for $1. You can connect to your Google Docs, upload and download files and edit them (well, word processor files at least) locally. It's a pretty good work around until Google fixes Doc, which i think they will as they did a nice version of gmail already.

Oh, neat. (I say this because I already bought Goodreader; those who haven't may be annoyed at having to buy a third-party product.) I don't have my iPad with me at work today, do you know the steps off the top of your head? Is it fairly intuitive?

If they didn't want other services to compete with their own, there would be no Netflix or ABC Streaming apps.

I hope this gets fixed sometime over the next few months. If Google did put out a better Gmail site for the iPad, I see it as more likely they'll do the same for Docs.

You can get around the automatic mobile site redirect with google sites by adding a bookmark to the non-mobile URL. I did this with igoogle and it take me to the standard site each time I click the bookmark.

Yeah, but SJ aint upset with ABC is he?

This is a point, unless Apple start to censor the web, they cannot really stop Google providing whatever content they feel like providing, my bad

Er, ya, it only edits text files (which you can get a text version of any doc when downloading)... I thout it could edit RTF files too, but i was wrong. Sorry... Not a great solution after all, but at least something.

We'll all have to email the creator of GoodReader and ask for RTF editing support i guess!

It is certainly better than nothing, and at least with this I could create a text file when I am WiFi-Less and upload to Google Docs when I regain WiFi access. We use Google Apps at work, so this will actually work fairly well for me.

This is also bugging me.

This plus the fact that I cannot check my AdSense stats on either the iPhone or iPad leads me to believe there is some kind of coordinated attack against Google by Apple going on.

This looks promising though not quite ready for prime time based on the reviews.

The ability to get docs in AND out of iDisk and googledocs is great, as is the ability to edit those docs. Not sure if it also allows you to send them as attachments but that'd be a must-add if not.

Mostly I hope goodreader adds great document editing

Tried copy the direct link while editing a document on laptop. Still forces me to mobile site. If anyone actually can *edit* a document in mobile safari right now, please let us know. With step by step instructions.

After trying a few different things, I went the GoodReader route - not the best solution, but it mostly works.

I download with GoodReader, select all, then paste into Pages. But how do I get It back to Google docs?

Still learning it I guess.

It does make me use IWork I guess, which might be Apple's "agenda" (ooh conspiracy!)
