While researching this phone, I read that the Galaxy s4 uses SwiftKey predictive engine for its stock keyboard. And I heard so many good things about SwiftKey. But when I used the stock keyboard, I didn't like the fact that I had to choose the predicted word each time instead of the phone auto correcting. So in the end I just went and bought SwiftKey, which is truly an amazing keyboard. But I found myself missing the stock Samsung keyboard layout. I like the way the Samsung keyboard had the row of numbers on top. Well to my surprise the stock keyboard has settings where you can set autocorrect to be on. So now I'm back to using the stock keyboard while still taking full advantage of the swift key predictive engine. For me its the best of both worlds. So for those that prefer the stock layout of the Samsung keyboard and didn't know there was an auto correct function go into settings and turn it on. For future devices I would hope Samsung would improve on its stock settings. This is the second time I had to adjust settings for something I would expect to be the preferred default. The camera settings was the first thing I had to adjust. But of course again that's just my opinion.

Galaxy S4 Keyboard Settings - Had No Clue

Samsung changed the way its keyboard works recently. Previously, you press the "spacebar" it will insert the predicted word (i.e. word in the center of word list). Now "spacebar" just leave letters you typed as is. Tapping a word in the word list is like tapping "spacebar" previously (no additional tap required since this also insert a space character).
This is how I configure my SwiftKey. Spacebar accepts the word as is and tapping on the predicted word uses that word.
This is not the "norm" if you came from iphone/other Android keyboards. Actually, I like the previous Samsung keyboard better. It includes the word formed with letters as typed in the word list for you to select. Spacebar inserts the predicted text. This is better since we rarely want to use word-as-typed.
I know this is not the norm. It is what I prefer. I generally don't like auto-correct. I do use the text prediction in SwiftKey, so after I type the word, I can see the word it thinks I want to type in the text prediction field. That way, I can spot any possible errors as I type. If I know what I am typing is not a word, I type more carefully and press the space bar to accept the word.
The default setting for SwiftKey is to auto-correct when hitting space bar. If I select that option, there would actually be no way to accept a non-word and prevent the auto-correct easily.
