I know that the Galaxy S5 is the big deal right now, but the S5 Mini, S5 Active, and S5 Zoom should be announced in May or June.

From the leaked specs, it seems that this year the Mini will finally be a more capable phone.

Rumored Specs from SamMobile.com
  • 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display with 720p resolution
  • Snapdragon processor (likely quad-core Snapdragon 400)
  • 8-megapixel rear camera
  • 2-megapixel front-facing camera
  • 1.5GB of RAM
  • 16GB storage
  • IR blaster
  • 2,100 mAh battery
  • IP67 certification like the Galaxy S5

Here is a render of what it should look like next to the S5. Seeing this has me excited. This is exactly the size device I want to carry with me. Last year the S4 Mini was unimpressive. A 4.5-inch 720p screen and a quad-core processor makes the S5 Mini a much more enticing phone. I just hope that Verizon doesn't put the logo on the home button again this year. That looked horrible.

Is anyone else excited about the S5 Mini?

I don't see the excitement on the Mini. Has the same specs as my two year old SGS3, except for the processor. Same screen resolution but smaller display, slightly better RAM, same battery, etc.

The active doesn't make sense now that the S5 is waterproof IMO.

Not even HTC with their Mini brings good specs. Just Sony with their Z1.

I like the Moto G. With stock Android it's gonna be faster, but I would miss 1080P video recording.

I'm not sure what the Active will bring. Samsung must have something unique to market it with, though.

As long as it runs the apps I use smoothly and has a good display I'll be happy. I'm at a point now that I rarely use my phone since I'm at my desk all day. I've stopped looking at specs. Large screens are an immediate turn off for me. Small screens get my attention. I'm fine with a mid-range as long as the display is small but good. That is if you consider 4.5-inch screen small. To me 4.5 is normal and everything else is unnecessarily large. I think we're getting to a point, though, that mid-range specs should be improving. In a couple years the minis will probably have a 1080p screen.

The S4 Mini's display had the same brightness and color saturation modes as the S4, so I hope that the S5 Mini is also bright and has Cinema Mode.

Agreed. Only Sony kept the specs the same and just shrunk the screen with the Z1. All of the other "mini" models have greatly reduced specs as well as a smaller screen.

I don't think that there will be a S5 Active. Like you said, it is sort of redundant since the S5 is already IP67 compliant.

What I'm excited for this year in the mid-range class is the Moto G 2.

If they bump the camera to 8Mpx + 1080P video recording (a must for me) then it would probably be my next device (if they keep price mostly the same).

There have been a few leaks about the Active, so it does seem to be happening. The most recent leak was yesterday from evleaks.

I'd be interested in the Moto G 2 if they can make it slimmer and have less bezel at the bottom. I tried it and didn't like it. It felt too big compared to the Moto X, and I thought it was ugly.

Someone missed the Droid Mini. It's literally a Moto X but in a 4.3 inch and some extra Verizon branding.

It's still going to be a SnapDragon 400? Last year's was a 400! Imo they should upgrade it to an 800 as the S5 has the 801.
