Of course I'm sure a choice of plastic or metal won't be the only 'S5' choices.

We will undoubtably have the S5 Active, the S5 Zoom, the S5 mini, the S5a (a to designate that its a little bit better specced than every other S5 but only released in Korea) etc....... ;)

Sad thing is - as irreverent as this post is - it undoubtably is also true :D

Though I haven't decided on my next 'flagship phone' purchase - at the moment I'm interested in Note 4 or if I decide to give another OS a change, possibly the successor to the Nokia 1020 and of course the bigger iPhone may be in for a chance too.

For me, It's only the Note series from here on out when it comes to Android phones. Hopefully another oem will step up and deliver another fantastic device that can rival the Note. I've yet to see one.

I agree completely.

Yet as an Apple enthusiast it's very disappointing to be stuck with the rather tiny iPhone 5S, while Apple has procrastinated for the last few years. Clinging to and profiting wildly off its strong marketing & cult like following, they've refused to give us a choice of sizes.

Not only that, had they added a second larger iPhone to the mix they would have sold like wildfire. This is an example of Apple being shortsighted and somewhat blinded by their narcissistic culture. Funny how such a well staffed company can make such odd decisions.

But it's nothing new, other companies do the same. Only Apples past CEO was able to convince the masses Apple is "special".

Yep, Apple is going to keep being Apple. I know a lot of people who would have jumped to the other side of the fence if Apple at least went with a 4.7" to 5" display. Personally, I definitely want a bigger iPhone but I'm okay with the size it is now since I have Android to compensate for that.

The market is there, why they're so reluctant to tap into it, I have no idea.

Well said.

Preferring choices, I've kept my iPhone 5S active, but added a line for my exemplary Nexus 5. It's been my primary smartphone of choice since they were released.

The combo of SWYPE, a super fast & efficient input method, & the spacious and very nice 5" display, this latest Nexus model has exceeded my expectation quite nicely. :D

I think apple should at least give people an option on what size you want. Least Samsung has a size for everybody.

I agree, Apple has thrown away two valuable years by not adding a second iPhone. It boggles the mind. One of the finest tech companies with an extreme amount of money, resources and everything they need to easily create a larger iPhone, only to sit idle and do nothing.

In my large circle of technology oriented friends, all of who used to use iPhones since the original, are now using Android phones after seeing the advantages. Had Apple provided what a vast number of people wanted, they would have not given up on iPhones. In addition just think of all the additional money Apple would've made. Two iPhone models, two income streams. Just like their laptops.

Now two years in, even if rumors are true and Apple makes a large screen iPhone it's questionable who will return. We're truly enjoying the Android experience on our Nexus 5's. iOS 7 is another example of Apples complacency. Too buggy with too many annoyances, they could have done far better.

But hey, Apples fat and happy, apparently that's all that matters. :)

The Samsung Galaxy J was released last month in Japan, and that had a metal casing.

To me, every year I try to get hyped by Samsung. And every year since 2012, I get disappointed by them. This is another "me too" move from them. Nothing new. Even the Galaxy J was fairly ugly. The water-resistant S4 Active which tried to compete with the Xperia Z series couldn't really compete on looks.

Apple, HTC, Motorola, Nokia, Sony, and many others have had a metal casing on previous smartphones for years. And with better and far more original designs. Even Asus and Huawei used more premium materials just last year. Now Samsung wants to charge premium for a metal version of a flagship just because they used plastic with fake-looking metal bands for years and have been behind the curve with metal for so long? Nothing revolutionary has come from Samsung since the Galaxy Note 1 from 2011. The only device I find interesting is the Galaxy Camera 1 or 2. I would love to see Android spread beyond smartphones and tablets.

Galaxy S5 might sport a new type of Li-ion battery with 2900 mAh capacity and rapid charging

We've been getting tips about the alleged battery capacity in the Samsung Galaxy S5, claiming it will be 2900 mAh, with rapid charging technology deployed, which will get the juicer pumped up to the rim in under two hours.

The Galaxy S4 has a 2600 mAh battery, so a 2900 mAh unit would be a nice bump in capacity, unless, of course, it has to maintain a 2K resolution display panel, then we'll probably hardly see any gain in battery life from the fourth generation to the fifth.

The interesting thing is that our tipsters claim it will be a new type of Li-ion battery that can store 20% more energy in the same footprint, so despite the bump in capacity, the battery size might stay the same, meaning more place for internals, and/or a more compact handset. The new technology in question is the one we told you about recently, coming from Stanford research. It uses a silicon anode instead of the typical graphite one, which allows a significant increase in capacity.

The type of battery that will supposedly be in the Galaxy S5, is commercialized by Amprius, a Silicon Valley startup, which says it can be produced with current technology, and is already in hundreds of thousands of electronics devices, shipping now also to "some smartphone makers". Not a bad deal if we get a 2900 mAh unit in the Galaxy S5, while it keeps the same compact frame as its predecessors.

Thanks for the tip!

See what happens when manufactures get a new battery technology? They end up trying to make the phone thinner, instead of taking advantage of the new battery and offering a larger battery with a higher capacity  .

Hopefully this small 2900 mAh is exclusive to the metal version and hopefully they will offer a higher capacity battery to the regular plastic version. The increase in mAh between the S3 and the S4 was about 500 mAh and it managed to almost get an extra hour of battery usage. The S5 will receive a similar bump in resolution as the S4 did, so with a 300 mAh larger battery, you can expect a similar battery usage to the S4, if not ever so slightly lower.

If they were to place the micro sd card slot and sim card slot in a similar place to where it's found on the note 3, rearrange the speakers, plus the slightly large frame of the S5, they would have had enough space to fit to easily fit a regular 3,000 mAh batter on the S5, and with the new tech, it could have been a higher capacity battery.

Hopefully this is just a case where the metal version needs a smaller sized battery and the plastic version can handle a larger sized battery. Otherwise, I see no reason as to why they would need a battery similar in size to the S4.

First time smartphone owners are jumping to Android, not currently existing iPhone users.

Because iPhone users upgrade even when there is no major difference to the last that's why. Apple fans are loyal and will buy the next iPhone even when it's not worth it.

This would make sense if the numbers stayed the same but they're increasing by a lot. Obviously there are a lot of people who choose iPhone as their first smartphone or who are Android refugees. It goes both ways but it's always funny whenever somebody tries to suggest that iPhone users are all jumping ship to Android.

I was one of those people who bought whatever iphone came out even when it wasn't needed. nothing wrong with that if thats what you wish to do of course.

not all iphone users are of course. I did but many love apple and will stick with them.

Well anyway that's enough talking about unrelated phones. :p

For this S5, I'm actually looking forward to seeing what the hardware looks like above all else. The Note 3's hardware was a good step in the right direction for Samsung.

will be interesting as it would point to the next direction the note 4 goes with. as you know the new features on the S5 will come with the next note.

The vast majority do jump to Android, simply because of the available options and price points. And it isn't like there are a lot of other options. Windows Phone or Blackberry is it, and the numbers show no one is picking Blackberry. So yeah, if you leave iOS, you are most likely going Android.

I'm gonna spit ball and guess the S5 will be thinner, faster CPU and gpu, higher pixel density, more megapixels for the camera and this is the biggie... "Champagne colored" metal! :p he he you heard it here first.

Seriously, Samsung needs to stop the tit for tat crap with Apple. Samsung went their own way with the S3 and hit a home run. They need to quit all the Touchwiz addons, stop the useless features, and move towards a simple (unbloated) UI that works. Keep the b.s. to a minimum. I mean seriously, 9gb of crap ware in Touchwiz is ridiculous.

Yeah I've never been a huge fan of TouchWiz. It has a lot of killer features but an even larger list of "why the hell is this taking up 50MB of RAM" features. 3GB on the Note 3 is excellent. 2.5 is actually usable by the user. About ~1.2GB go to just running TouchWiz idle. I'd do anything for a pure Android Note 3 that has some of the useful features like multitasking and Pen Window...but I highly doubt even a "Google Play Edition" version would have those TW-exclusive features. :(

I hope motorola has a phablet up their sleeve. I would definitely pick one up. I love my moto X. Motorola would be just the company to take stock android, add in the pen functionality along with their touch control and active notifications and have it work flawlessly and not be a gimmick. Touchless control gets better on the moto X as time goes on. Motorola has been updating it through the play store biweekly with new features and accuracy improvements.

Ah, the Moto X will forever hold a special place among my long list of phones I've owned. It was a truly special and vastly underrated phone.
