Galaxy S7 is a hot potato?

I'm on day 3 of using my Galaxy S7 temporary replacement for my recalled Note 7. It's also auctioning as a possible replacement for my 6S Plus on my original line that I planned to trade in after I get my Note 7 phablet back.

The crazy thing is that my potentially explosive Note 7 ran cool as a cucumber. It was cool during the set up period and cool filming videos and cool during fast charging. It only got hot once when I downloaded and tried to run Neko Atsume while the phone was experiencing another glitch I didn't know about until later.

My Galaxy S7 is a hot potato. It's hot off the charger. It got hot during setup. It got very hot casting home videos to the Samsung Smart TV we have. It was hot when I was outside texting my husband. Granted I was in some sunlight but I can text from an iPhone SE or 6S Plus under the same conditions and not feel the phone generating its own heat along with whatever it picks up from the sun. I didn't have my Note 7 long enough but I don't recall it heating up when I used it in the sun to take pictures.

It's always running a bit warm. Is this normal for the S7? I looked on AT&T's site and did see a one star review talking about a lady's S7 being another hot potato.

I'm definitely returning this particular unit so I can get my Note 7 back. But I was trying to determine what "normal" is for an S7 since I was considering getting one for my other line. I like the size of it. It can switch back and forth with my SE as my pocket phone when I need a waterproof phone and wear shorts or jeans with sufficient pocket depth.

I had the same experience with both my S7 (hot) and Note 7 (cool)

Snapdragon S7 seems to be quite hot compared to the Exynos version, while also performing worse and not lasting as long.

I'm using the exynos dual sim variant right now. Mine never gets hot. It gets little warmer on fast charge but not what could be described hot. In every day use it runs cool for me.

Possibly a Snapdragon 820 difference, as my HTC 10 gets warmer on fast charge than the exynos S7, however it doesn't run hot ever when I've been using it.

That's interesting mentioning the cool factor with the Note 7. I have heard others say their Note 7 ran relatively cool compared to the S7, even with the recall. Some are even keeping Their Note 7 thinking they may or may not have an issue with it. I think they like to think their Note is a minority and maybe there Phone won't experience the battery issues the other Note's are experiencing.

How long is your Note expected to be returned to you? No iPhone 7 consideration?

It may just be sinking the heat to the body differently. With PC if you feel heat on on the heat sink then it's doing its job properly transferring the heat from CPU to heat sink. What's more important is the interior temperatures. Perhaps try an app like CPU-Z to monitor and compare internal temperatures and maybe look at tear down pictures of both devices to try to determine cooling design. Or, just ask Samsung.

I can easily get an Exynos Galaxy S7 from Best Buy so I might if I decide to stay with S7.

But the selfies this thing takes in room light are scary bad, way worse than my SE selfies with the older IPhone selfie camera. The Note 7 did gorgeous selfies in horrible light and good light. Sigh...I miss my Note 7.

There's so much I love about this S7 but there are a few things that make me wonder if it's acting up because there's a defect somewhere in either the hardware or how I've got the software set up, or I simply am spoiled by the Note 7. I'm going to take all the opportunities I have to test this before I return it.

I'm still trying to decide whether to give the Note 7 a chance after all the reported issues and recall, mostly because my S7 is going so smoothly and no issues with it, I feel I could end up trading in a device I have no issues with hardware wise for one that may be saddled with them, and especially after my appalling S6 Edge ordeal last year and getting that fixed.

It's feels a bit like a game of smartphone Russian roulette.

So may just decide to keep the S7 and sell off my Note 7 cases and screen protectors once it's been relaunched.. I just can't decide at the moment.



Actually that's got me thinking. It was reported that Samsung SDI did produce a small percentage of the batteries in the S7 & S7e (it wasn't the main supplier). Given what has happened with the Note 7 could there be some correlation. Sadly I don't think there's anyway of knowing what battery manufacturer has been used even with phone info.

I'm not sure. I think next week we will start to see AT&T get some replacement stock in. The store I favor using deals with a high volume of Samsung customers so it may be hard to get there in time for a replacement the first day or two.

I really like Android...more than I ever expected to, considering how many years I've heard my husband and his friends complain about their experiences with it. I thought it was really beautiful and the way it was implemented on Note 7 was such a pleasure to use even my Android-hating husband fell in love with his Note7.

I will reserve judgement about IPhones until I see the keynote tomorrow. If there is no headphone jack I will be really cheesed off. It makes a big difference to me. But I'm all about the camera. Not so much that I am thinking of getting that honking huge IPhone 7 Plus. One phablet is enough for me and for me the Note 7 is it. But the Galaxy S7 so far does some really awkward looking selfies. My SE does surprisingly well but the selfie camera is older tech. So I'm willing to consider an iPhone 7.

Now, I'm not the kind of gal who stands in the bathroom in sexy underwear taking ducklipped selfies for Instagram and Facebook. But I have learned the value of the selfie camera on recent once-in-a-lifetime events and trips where I want to be part of the picture with my family. Looking back at old photos, it's really sad but it looks like I had died and it was just my husband and the grandparents and the kids left to carry on without me. Nobody thinks to snap a pic of dear old mom, especially since I'm not exactly Adriana Lima. I've had to become aggressive about insisting my husband take some pics of me or someone else and they tend to behead me. With the wide angled selfie camera of the Note7, I can be part of the family photos again and retain control of how the shot is framed.

I hope the iPhone 7 selfie camera is more wide angled than before. The Note7 selfie camera is wide angled enough to fit me well into group photos without everyone awkwardly squishing in. I forgot to check to see if the S7 camera is wide angle, too. From the few selfies I took so far it doesn't appear to be. I'll go check when I get it back from my kid.

AT&T won't charge me a restocking fee for the return of this S7. But they will for any other one I get. Hmm. Not happy right now at risks I take trying to get another S7 that doesn't run hot so darned much. It's like the darned iPhone lottery we all play with displays, only this one is scary.

I do have some concerns about USB-C. I've done a lot of reading and apparently it's not always implemented properly and when it's not, even with brand name USB-C chargers you run some safety risks. I think over on Android central there was a guy warning about one of the other manufacturers having a flagship phone that doesn't have proper overheating controls to shut down when getting too much juice through the USB-C charger. I may have to eat my words criticizing Apple for not jumping on the USB-C bandwagon. That might have been the reason...safety concerns.
