Gallery replacement

Hello all,

I'm looking for a replacement to Gallery and I'm about to decide on Flickr Pro.

I just have one question. Does Flickr limit the number of photos that can be uploaded to a set?

I've got several Events that have well over 500 photos and Gallery was always limited to 500 photos.

Does Flickr do this?

I've looked at it too. The reason I'm leaning towards Flickr is because it has the uploader built into iPhoto.

I forgot about that. But Picasa is owned by Google, so it should be integrated into a lot more. Decisions decisions. Any other down sides to Picasa?

Does EXIF data get transferred to Picassa? For me it's necessary to have my photo titles uploaded as well.

I think so. I know it can read the EXIF data from the .CR2 pictures I take, so I would assume it would read it from any other image too.

When I heard that Gallery was being dropped, I also started looking around for an adequate replacement. After researching a bit, I decided on SmugMug.

I recommend that you consider SmugMug for your needs. I haven't been disappointed with my decision.

When I heard that Gallery was being dropped, I also started looking around for an adequate replacement. After researching a bit, I decided on SmugMug.

I recommend that you consider SmugMug for your needs. I haven't been disappointed with my decision.

I'll definitely check it out.

I found out last night that picasa won't allow more than 500 pics per set anyway. So I'm back to square one.

I'll see what SmugMug has to offer.

While looking for the best replacement for iDisk I stumbled upon this very useful iCloud FAQ. Amongst other things, it gives a list of alternatives for all discontinued MobileMe services and compares them. You can have a look at the gallery alternatives here. Very convenient.

Edit: Just came across the Adobe Carousel article on the MacBlog page. I think it falls in the Gallery replacement category but the subscription price could be prohibitive. Too bad.

For me I have just moved all my pics to Photobucket, for the small 2 year fee it was worth it. Not nearly as nice as the MM interface, but it does the job of having my photos online and as a back up. I also like the i-device and iPhoto, Firefox plug ins they have.

I also upgraded to paid account on Dropbox as a secondary photo back up and for other data back up uses. The integration of Dropbox to OSX and IOS is just amazing and the execution of the sync services is great. Of course there are security concerns with Dropbox recently, but I am not storing anything personal that if stolen would really make a world changing difference, so it is okay. The duality of using it as a multi pc sync platform is a bonus.

So while I have until June of next year to move my crap off of MM I decided to do it now, have everything in place and just use the free iCloud stuff when it comes and spend the time implementing and fine tuning my use of Dropbox and Photobucket.
