So, I just ordered a 27" Apple LED Cinema Display today. Weeee! I know you're jealous, but that's not why I mention it. No, I have a question:

Is gaming performance (noticeably) worse, when playing games on an external monitor?

I have a 15" i7 MBP with 8GB RAM and GeForce GT 330M 512MB.

There's of course a difference in resolution: 1680x1050 vs. 2560x1440 - about twice as many pixels. But will that result in the half amount of fps?

It works fine. In some instances when i played wow (Don't anymore-thank god)
I had better frame rates while i had an external monitor while running windowed than when i played only on my MBP 17" without the external monitor.
Don't know how that is possible but thats how it was. :p

Keep your MBP open while you play games! If I'm playing Starcraft 2 and have my MBP closed, it'll get so hot it turns off. Even with it open, sometimes it feels dangerously hot.

The higher resolution will lower performance - you're just going to have to try it and see whether it's acceptable or not. You might want to run the external at a resolution lower than native. For games, that's not necessarily a bad option, and just think - you get anti-aliasing without a performance penalty!
