OS X game recommendations?

Hi,

I just recently bought a late 2013 rMBP 13in 2.4/256/8gb and I was wondering what are some good games that I can play on it? I'm really new to computer gaming because ive had an xbox 360 but its broken now and i dont game much to see the need to pay for the repair. So just for casual gaming, what are some good games?
 
What is good to me and what is good to you could easily be different things. You didn't mention what kinds of games you like.

Steam's Summer sale is going on now. I'd recommend shopping for deals there on games that appeal to you. For each one that catches your eye you can always check that game's forums and often the metacritic score (just for a ballpark idea of quality) for further info to aid you in purchasing decisions.

If you don't have Steam on your Mac yet, Google for Steampowered and you'll find where to download it. If you've never used Steam before, the client is small and offers the Steam Store plus organization of games purchased there and other features. Millions of gamers shop there.

The Mac App Store is in my opinion another good place to find some casual games such as iOS ports that you often won't find on Steam. You can find AAA games as well.

On both stores I mention, a pair of publishers you can trust for high quality Mac ports are Feral Interactive and Aspyr. They do really nice work on popular titles to bring them to the Mac.

Just so you're aware also, your particular Mac is not well-suited for gaming due to its integrated graphics processor and fairly small SSD (some games can take up 20 GB or more of space). It's certainly capable, but you have to be realistic with your performance expectations. Older and not graphically demanding titles will run well, but if you're interested in high-profile newer releases, you'll need to dial back the resolution and detail settings. It all depends on what games you want to buy.

20GB is on the high end. Most games don't breach 5GB or so. The indie games are usually less than 1GB and lighter on graphics horsepower.

haha I know, I haven't really been up to date with my gaming knowledge ever since my xbox broke over a year ago and I never gamed on my previous PC because it was just a base HP that wasn't able to run games well.

Although im not planning on playing graphics intensive and really new games, cant i use an external harddrive to save the games to?

Using Steam you can denote other drives and folders to be part of your library. So you can definitely use external storage. You can also redownload games as often as you like which is what I do as I have over 600 games on Steam and no need to store them all locally, plus I have a fast enough internet connection that even the biggest games take around 10 minutes tops to download.

Steam does allow you to install games to other drives/partitions, but it somewhat defeats the purpose of having such an otherwise portable computer. I've tried it myself - using a small SSD for the operating system and using an external drive for storage but found the whole experience rather cumbersome. You might not.

Again, it all depends on what you want to play.

I will most likely be gaming only when I'm at home so it would be better to just use an external drive.

I cant believe my eyes with this statement.

Get steam as soon as possible on your Mac, and browse all the great games and great sales going on right now!

Some old games from Bungie's past may interest you. You can find Pathways Into Darkness on the Mac App Store, either for free or for really cheap. The Marathon trilogy is also available for free at source.bungie.org.
 
Didn't know there were people under the age of 40 with an interest in gaming who didn't know what Steam is.
