Ok, just as a fair warning, this is my first mac so yes, i'm a mac noob (forgive me), and i'm not entirely sure how things work in the mac world as far as gaming goes.

So yea, its my first mac, and i bought the lowest end pro (yea the new ones). I didnt buy it with the intention of it being a great gaming machine, nor did i buy it strickly for gaming. Having said that, i ended up installing the Doom 3 demo just to see how the game looks and runs on my new MBP. Well, on mid level settings/res, the game kinda chugged, and i was slightly dissapointed because i thought it would be at least 25 - 30 fps, but i only really got about 10 - 12. So i lowered the settings and even took off shadows, and it went up a bit but not to my expectations. So since i own the game on PC, i installed boot camp, windows xp, then doom 3, and on the highest possible settings (without any AA though) i got 70 frames per second! I mean wow, i totally didnt expect that after how low the frames were in os x.

Anyways, my question pretty much is, does this game (doom 3) just not port well to os x, or do i need to update my graphics drivers (if they even release updated drivers for mac vid cards)? Can somebody give me a little insight about gaming on mac, doom 3 on mac and what i can do to improve my FPS? I mean, i assume my hardware isnt faulty since i get stellard frames within bootcamp running winXP. Thanks

Doom 3 demo may not have been Universal Binary (which means it is not optimized for the Intel processors in your MBP)

The full game - did receive two patches.

The first allowed the game to support the new Intel processors. This was the universal binary patch.

The second allowed the game to support 'Multi - Processors' which resulted in huge performance gains.

The game played great on my iMac 20" Core Duo - so on a new MBP it should really fly.

So basically it probably was just that the demo was compiled for the older hardware, and hence performed badly.

Hope that explains it :)

Ahhh i see, that actually does explain it perfectly! I mean i knew that they are now using intel chips over the ppc ones but i just didnt peice together the fact that doom 3 was made prior to the intel macs.

Thanks for the info! :)

If you want full gaming experience with all the latest drivers and everything, you should consider using Boot Camp. Boot Camp allows you to install FULL Windows on another partition of the hard drive.

There are benefits to reading the entire OP's post ;)

I did that actually, and i was blown away at the frames i got in doom 3! i Put the settings as high as they go (without any AA), and i got 70 frames per second! The sad part is, my friend just bought a similarly priced Acer Vista laptop, with 256mb video ram, and he only got about 25 frames on the same settings. Kinda funny considdering mine is only 128mb! I love my new mac!

Yey! Congrats!

well you shouldn't be suprised, you have one of the best laptops ever built (if not the best?). I have a macbook pro with weakest processor (Core Duo) and i feel like a king using it!
