I've installed windows xp on my mbp to play some games and the only thing that really worries me is the temperature. When I play civilization IV the temperature gets up to 73C/78C degrees with my fan spinning at 4800rpm.

Is the mbp made to sustain temperatures like this for a long period of time? I know the mbp is not a laptop designed for games but can it take the stress from games? Only thing I hate to accept is the fact that the more the heat, the less the life expectancy.

You can probably find a few threads around here that can help with Fan control in XP.

As far as sustained temps go, at one of my clients offices I have to access a 4D database application for book publishing information and with it open, Bean or Pages for the copy I am writing and AI CS3 I run around 70-72 deg. celsius all day and have had no real issues.

No problem what so ever. Any sort of desktop publish software would give the CPU a work out and would bring up heat, anything video/audio editing would bring the temp up. Sure, the MBP might not be designed for games, but they are designed for other CPU (and heat) intensive tasks. So if the MBP have no real issue with other tasks, why should gaming be any different?

Right now, I'm really enjoying bits and pieces of GRAW2 and Bioshock when I'm on the road with my MBP (C2D SR, 8600M GT 258) and have had no real issue.

You shouldn't worry about it
