Hello,

I know the new mac pro isn´t ment for gaming but are here any experience in gaming with the new mac pro. After a long day of work I would love to play some games under bootcamp with the new mac pro. Especially with, for example, the 5700x the gaming performance should be good ;)

The videos on youtube say that gaming is in not even bad with a upgraded GPU in the mac pro.

Thanks for your experience.

Ran some old games (Supreme Commander:FAF) in a parallels Win10 vm at 50-75 fps/3840x1600. Vanilla MC at 60-110. Same FPS on 580X or 5700xt. Pretty impressed by the Parallels Metal/Catalina update.

I do. Am playing

Borderlands 3 - 4k - medium/High - 60-70fps
Fortnite - 4k - Medium - 60 fps

Gonna try Shadow of the Tomb raider sometime next weekend.

This is on a 12 Core - Vega II - 96GB

If you wanna check some specific games, let me know. Ill give them a try, if I have them.

With the latest drivers from bootcampdrivers.com, I’m at a stable 60 FPS on Ultra (max) settings for The Outer Worlds. Haven’t tried many other games but performance is quite excellent in boot camp.

config:
12 core
32 gb ram
Vega II Duo (only one in use though, Windows driver doesn’t seem to support crossfire on this GPU)

edit: at 1440p resolution

Do you have PUBG?

Do anyone have the stock 580 in his or her mac pro? Sadly the Vega Duo is too expensive for me. I will go with an aftermarket 5700xt.

I have PUBG and can try and post tomorrow morning. But I can only do so on my Vega II.
BTW. I did not mention this before. These are all on Bootcamp. Fortnite is playable on the Mac (way better on Windows), Borderlands sxcks big time on the Mac. Not optimized at all.

From what I know, the 580 that comes with the Mac Pro is about 4-5% slower than the retail version. Once you go 5700xt, you shouldn't have an issue at all.

I put in a Gigabyte 580 I had been using with an MBP into my 7,1 when it arrived - it did indeed a Geekbench 5 score about 5% faster than the 580X MPX.

Black Ops 3, stupendous. Rise of the Tomb Raider, 2560x1440@144Hz, gorgeous. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, ARMA 3… butter. Of course this is only after slapping in a Radeon VII. I'm not sure I'd even try with that 580X.

That sounds great. Thanks mate.

I tried PUBG and could easily run at 4k - ULTRA 60-65 fps. So a 5700XT should be more than good for gaming.

I updated the RAM config from a mixed module config to 6x16GB modules today. Both times the total RAM was 96GB. Not only I am seeing an increased performance across Lightroom/FCP (almost 30-50%), the fps on Borderlands 3 went up by 12-15%.

Super cool

Anyone doing some gaming using the W5700X?

Setup my boot camp partition yesterday and loaded up COD MW, and I’m getting a lot of what look like texture glitches. Looking down the scope of a rifle I can’t see anything at all!

Running the latest Radeon Pro drivers on Windows 10 Pro May 2020 build.

Can you do a screen capture of a scene and post it for us to see?

I need to try loading up another game because this may be a COD MW problem, I’m seeing mentions of this rainbow effect elsewhere. Makes it unplayable.

This is happening to me too. I have the Vega Pro II though but same drivers. This is a driver level issue. Apple needs to update the boot camp drivers to include the newest AMD drivers as the newest AMD drivers fixed this Particular issue. Everyone with an AMD card had this issue until AMD released new drivers to fix it and Apple hasn’t implemented the new drivers into boot camp drivers yet.

As a workaround, you can use the “unofficial boot camp drivers“ and that’ll fix the issue since those drivers use the newer drivers from AMD. Be forewarned though, with those unofficial drivers, I experienced random lockup’s requiring hard reset so I went back to the official drivers and am waiting patiently for Apple to update the drivers.

So essentially, your Mac Pro is fine.

EDIT: Also, only COD MW is affected, all other games (That I play) are fine.

Hey mate, yeah expected this to be the case! So annoying that you can't just use the latest drivers from AMD.

I did look into the unofficial drivers, but unfortunately, they haven't been updated to support the W5700X yet so they didn't work for me at all (I tried).

Hopefully Apple sorts this out soon!

Would the Vega Pro II "Duo" be even better than the non Duo for gaming in bootcamp?

There are only a handful of games that will benefit from the Duo, Ashes of the Singularity being one of them. But other than the few games that support mGPU, duo is not going to be better than a single Vega II.

Is the duo going to be better than the W5700X for gaming (in bootcamp) - disregarding price/performance?

The Duo should be 10-15% better. Probably even more in some games. I have Destiny 2 running at 5k ultra (70-90fps) and consumes more than 16GB RAM on the GPU. So that should help is some games as well.

Borderlands 3 runs at 1440p medium - 70-80 fps. Can do 4k but low quality. The game is not optimized at all.

To clarify, are those numbers on the duo or W5700X ?
