so he no longer has his music on ITunes. All my albums are greyed out say “not available in this count”. Thing is I own the albums. Is is because I use the cloud for music? Is there a way around it to have my songs on the phone?

Assuming you're using Apple Music/iTunes Match you may have to delete and re-add. They'll become "uploaded" rather than "matched" tracks (and you'll lose your play counts).

I would have thought, though, that Apple would have kept the songs in the cloud for previous customers, and just removed them from the iTunes shopfront. That's what they did with The Complete U2.

Maybe Brooks' label expressly forbade that.
