I currently have a Geforce 7600 GT in my desktop and I was curious if there was a way I could see how it stacks up against mobile graphic cards from the new iMac and Macbook Pro.

Thanks in advance!

From reading the results of your tinkering with the latest Catalyst 7.9 drivers it would appear Apple has MAJOR driver issues. I'm sure there is "some" legitimate reason why Apple can't seem to get their graphics drivers right, but after readying posts like this I become very skeptical.

You shouldn't have to tinker with your new iMac to obtain 3D performance considered standard by the rest of the industry.

At this point I can only assume it is a lack of desire on Apple's part. We know Apple can do great things when they want to, so they must not have the desire to spend too much time, effort or money in this area.

Come on Apple... Get those drivers perfected!

If you're still trying to get 3d mark to load, the answer is below. It loads fine - I renamed the dll.

Q: I just bought the ATI Radeon HD 2900XT and 3DMark06 freezes during the splash-screen. What is wrong and how can I fix this?

A: This is a known issue and we have been able to reproduce it in our test lab. The problem lays in an DLL which we use to detect the graphics cards' core and memory speeds. We are working on an update to correct this issue after which all Futuremark benchmarks should run fine with the latest offerings from all IHV's. Until then you can work around this issue either by renaming the "Direcpll.dll" file (found in %WINDIR%\system32\Futuremark\MSC\) to something else, or you can run the benchmark using the -nosysteminfo command line. Please note that if you use the -nosysteminfo command line, you will not be able to publish the result online. Futuremark will inform all its users when the update is available!

Here is a great way to compare video card specs:

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php

Using that, the 7600GT would calculate to be about a good 25-50% faster than the HD 2600Pro. Keep in mind that the Apple card in the iMac might be clocked lower than the default PC version.

... which would be a poor comparison because the iMac has a downclocked Mobility 2600XT which is not yet listed.

I added 3DMark05 benchmark to my list on Ars Technica forums.

Pretty pleased with the result, keep in mind it was obtained with the catalyst 8.0 beta driver.

I got approximately 2400 marks higher than my old system which was a 2.51Ghz AMD Athlon, 1.5GB ram, and a ATI X800XT PE (overclocked).

The iMac is really starting to prove itself as a good gaming system.

Bootcamp is beta until Leopard comes out. Until then, it's not surprising there are no driver updates really.

The Radeon better be getting a speedboost with Leopard Bootcamp though.

What kinda speedboost do you need? just install the OFFICIAL ATI drivers, for the card. Thats how I'm getting these numbers, even when Bootcamp goes official, it won't be as updated as often as ATI updates their own card.

RevToTheRedline describes how to install them about 1/3 of the way down this page: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8300945231/m/233003947831

Works fine for me, and things definitely run smoother with the updated drivers. He also says how to install the catalyst control centre a bit further down, so you can have the full lot.

i agree i did it that way and the only thing i really play in windows is oblivion and it works a lot better with the better drivers

Any benchmark comparisons?
Oblivion needs a hefty gpu to make it run well and is a much better benchmark for this card than HL2 and Doom 3 which are really old games that can be played on a macbook but are still being used to test new machines.

i dont know how to tell frames in oblivion, but i would guess its around 35-40, which is pretty good considering how much rendering there is, i play with AA 4 samples in 1440X900 settings on high....and it looks really good, no real slowdown...
