GeForce GT 130 vs GeForce 8800 GS

You won't see them being "much better" than the 8800gs. In fact they are very, very similar cards. That being said the faster 1066 Mhz DDR3 RAM alone in the new iMacs will bump the 130 up over the 8800gs by a slight margin. There are a few sites that show this very fact in 3d b-marks already, but the difference is not mind blowing.

It's this reason imho that so many people are/were let down by Apples latest updates. As far as the iMac goes our choices are pretty much to buy the same old high end iMac with virtually the same old gpu but in a prettier dress (the prettier dress being the DDR3 1066 Mhz RAM) or wait another 2 months for 10.7 and custom order an already on it's way to being outdated ati mobile gpu. Oh and I can't forget to mention the bigger HDDs if that happens to be a big "upgrade" to you (it isn't to me).

and in the UK the top end iMac has gone from £1499 to £1799. I assume because the strength of the pound has dropped so much.

So if a game specification says 8800 or equivalent the GT 130 is an equivalent?

The 8800 GS is faster as a GT 130. ;)

The desktop versions of the 8800 GS and GT 130 are similar, but the mobile versions are not.


GT 130 aka 9600 GSO

8800 GS aka 8800M GTS


Look at Benchmarks, the 8800M GTS is faster as a 9600 GSO.
 
Oh ok so which is better the 8800GS that was in the old iMacs or the new GT 130?

or

You will see that the "old" 8800 GS aka 8800M GTS is faster then a GT 130 aka 9600 GSO.


Thats the joke, the "new" upgraded 24" 3.06Ghz iMac has not only the same CPU, he also has a slower GPU in standart configuration... :D
 
Either way....

the new model has the same or slightly worse graphics card in it than the year old machine it replaced.

For more money.

A lot more money if you live in the UK.


Seriously... you just couldnt make it up. This was not an update.. If I bought one of the new top end machines I would actually feel like I'd been mugged !

But you are right, i was trying to say:

The 8800 GS is faster than the GT 130.


I simply used as instead of then.
 
iMac 8800GS actually a GT...

Also bear in mind the old iMac's GPU technically wasn't an 8800GS. The chip was actually the better 8800GT (desktop part, not mobile) with a 10% reduction in clock speed over a standard GT, which is probably why Apple chose to label it a GS.

Also, I don't think Apple wanted people to know it was the same card as was available in the more expensive Mac Pros.

The new 3.06GHz iMac with the GT130 is in my opinion a shockingly bad deal compared to the old one, at least in the UK. A £400 quid price rise for essentially the same spec computer :confused:. I guess its currency fluctuations,but still...

The nomenclature was Nvidia's, as is tihs current f' up of naming scheme. Thank you Nvidia for screwing it up so badly. ATi is the only sane company with a naming scheme right now
 
Oh ok :( thats a bit of a bummer.... so after the update im gonna pay £400 for nothing (except memory and HDD), I get same proc and worse/same GPU?

Yes, worse GPU, not same... :mad:

You have to choose the HD4850 to get a minor speedbump.


The "old" 3.06Ghz iMac was a better deal.
 
Despite what they say, the old iMacs never had a 8800 GS in them, and the new imacs don't have a GT130 in them. The 8800 GS was a 8800M GTS and the GT130 appears to actually be a 9800M GS (not a 9600 GSO as some people seem to think - the 9600 GSO and the "GT130" in the new iMacs have COMPLETELY different specs)

The 9800M GS is better but comparable to the 8800 GTS.

The clocks do seem to suggest it's teh 9800M GS, so slightly faster than the 8800M GTS but not by a lot, so it'll be an improvement over the old card, but the mobility radeon 4850 wills till be faster (and if its desktop version, even faster)
