God bless Apple. I love 'em to death, and there's not a chance bloody hell I would ever use anything else. But there some things that are sincerely annoying me. I'm hoping 10.3.3 fixes them (whenever it's released) but until then.....

1) Safari
Often when I hit Command-T to create a new, it doesn't create a new tab, but closes all but one window in the program, and makes that one completely blank - it won't let me use the back button, so whatever I might have been working on in that window is lost. Agh!

Safari has been really pokey for no good reason. My internet connection is raging fast (3 Mbps/512 Kbps), yet Safari still stalls. It mostly happens when I'm trying to enter text into the address bar or in any given field in a window. I'll start typing text and the little Beach Ball of Death pops up.

Other times without provocation or warning, Safari just decides to stop working and freezes or randomly quits. Not reason. It just does.

2) Finder
Finder likes to randomly quit too. Almost every time I export a photo from iPhoto, Finder quits and relaunches. Or when I open up any given program, it quits and relaunches.

When I try launching applications (Has happened with most of them, but quite often with Disk Utility, Mail, iChat, & System Preferences), the computer freezes for anywhere from 5 seconds to a full minute with the ubiquitous beach ball doing its thing.

Bah. There are a bunch of others, but basically, the point is that everything is very buggy lately. None of it started immediately after an update or anything, but developed over time. I repair disk permission regularly, go through a delete files I no longer need, etc. Yet it still does all this. I have plenty of RAM (768 MB - I would have more if I could afford the 1GB chip) so I can't imagine that being the problem. Anyhow, any help or advice you might offer is more than welcome, as are posts from anyone who simply wants to commiserate. Thanks!

Duff-Man says...when you installed 10.3 was it an "upgrade" install or did you do a clean install? One thing to test is your user account - try making another user and seeing if the problems affect that user as well....that can help trace it down to some pref file (or cache file) of something in your system.....oh yeah!

I would recommend deleting the preferences files first thing, and see if that helps. If you don't know, preference files are located in your home folder in the library/preferences folder. if you delete com.apple.safari and com.apple.finder it might help some.

Thanks Duff-man. :p No, my computer is actually a five-month old 1GHz 12" PowerBook that came with Panther pre-installed. I also just set-up a user account - I haven't used it much, but none of the problems had yet happened. So, hmmmmm... preference files, eh?

Which preferences would I want to delete? All of them? I hesitate to do that, as I have A LOT of bookmarks.

Annoying, but not issues Apple needs to work on. You've got some gremlins running around in your computer. I have to wonder about your installation as well--clean or upgrade?

It definitely sounds like you have a problem with your system.

You don't have to delete everything. Just try deleteing the Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist file.

But, before you do that, do play around in the test user account. Determine whether the problems are in your account, or in the system. Try importing your bookmarks and preferences to the test account so that you can work there. If you have no problems, then it's not the system, but the preferences in your User Account.

If the problems persist, then it's the system. Make a backup copy of your Home/Preferences folder (and of course any Documents/Music, etc folders), and do a clean reinstall of Panther.

why would you need pacifist? i know what it is, but you can download safari from apple...

some sites just don't work with safari (use ie  ), but lately i have been having issues with some browser plug-ins. nothings serious, but for example on icompositions (it happens everywhere) occasionally when i go to play a song, the little shuttle/dot/things will not respond to anything. i just switch to another window/tab and come back and everything is where it should be. i also have problems with the flash plug-in sometimes. sound is always perfect, but the frames are incredibly jumpy. specifically, this annoys me while at happytreefriends.com. i'm forced to use ie for that :(
if you could try to see if that site works well for you (it's just the episodes) many thanks. (a fore-warning: that site is incredibly gory. don't let the name deceive you ;) )

i'm hoping 10.3.3 (which was released half and hour ago!!) will fix the above problems. it has already been noted that safari is now 1.2.1 so..... if only i had a faster internet connection...
