macOS general iPhone dev question re 2.0 firmware

I recently purchased the $99 iPhone developer program, but I haven't set it all up yet because I'm unsure of a couple of things. It seems like I read somewhere that if you install the developer firmware that you may be stuck on it, and since I have only one iPhone, that really isn't an option. So, I guess what I'm asking is this: if I go ahead and install the beta 2.0 firmware, can I still use the phone normally to make calls, send/receive email, ipod, safari, etc...? I can't afford another device to develop on at the moment, and I need my phone fully functional.

I have the same question.. is there anyone here from canada who has accepted teh developer program and setup his iphone for dev use?

There is a way to restore your iPhone to your original firmware (I believe it is from itunes you can choose from a drop down box which version to install). I have my phone on the 2.0 firmware (beta 4, haven't upgraded to beta 5 yet) and I use it just as I always did to make calls, text, ipod.

The Apple answer is that you cannot downgrade your phone and get it out of testing mode. In Beta 3 and below it was possible by option-click Restoring in iTunes to 1.1.4 and then using one of those tools like iLiberty+ to knock the device out of DFU mode when it gets stuck, but I haven't bothered trying with Beta 4 or 5 so do it at your own risk.

On the other hand, I've been using my developer iPhone day-to-day and haven't really have many problems. Then again if something went wrong its not like I'd lose a big business deal or something, so keep in mind that it IS a beta and use it at your own risk based on how much you rely on your device.

that's kind of what I thought. I actually called apple and asked them whether or not normal use was still possible when using the beta firmware. Their response was that some don't have any problems and some do. Furthermore, they recommend using a device that isn't your primary phone.

I took a look around, and there are ways to get back to 1.1.4, but it isn't a straightforward process. Why in the hell Apple is making a restore to 1.1.4 unavailable I'll never understand. That being said, since this is my primary phone, I'm going to wait until the official 2.0 firmware comes out and see how they handle the developers' access to the iphone OS.
