Keyword: Leftover.

The reserved iPads are held until 3PM or when the line is gone; whichever is longer. After that, the "leftover" iPads (the ones held for reserve and people didn't pick them up), will be available to anyone who wants one.

The Apple stores will also have regular stock of iPads and will be sold on first come, first served basis.

No, it will be held until 3 p.m. In the reservation emails, there is no mention of a "line".

From the iPad reservation email:

Please note that your reservation will be held only until 3 p.m. on April 3. After 3 p.m., iPad will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last.

From the iPad reservation email:

That makes no sense. If there's still a line at 3PM and people have been there waiting most of the day, they wouldn't just release them to anybody. Talk about tons of upset people. Apple is all about the consumer and they definitely wouldn't upset people just because it's 3PM. If that happened, Adobe CEO, Steve Ballmer, Google CEO and others would be doing back flips and the HP Slate would take over. There would be lots of bad press that would travel around the world and through the Internet for months. I would hope Apple is too smart for that because there are millions of people just waiting for them to fail.

:apple:

That was my understanding as well. No iPad sales to anyone without a reservation until 3pm.

We shall see...

I don't think that is correct.

I see it working like this..

The Apple store gets a total shipment of 500 iPads. Of those, 300 were "Reserved" thru the website, leaving 200 for people who didn't reserve.

They will sell both at the same time...if the 200 sell out, then they will tell people they are sold out.

If the 300 people that reserved dont all show up, say only 250 show up, then at 3pm, they will take the remaining 50 and put them up for sale to anyone.

Make sense?

"Reserve for pick up" to me, means my iPad better be there, if I come in on the 4th, 5th, 6th .... they better not make me have to deal with the mess on Saturday (a weekend traveling holiday to boot for some). That wouldn't make sense to make the reserver be there before 3. Very unwise to sell any that were not picked up by 3. That would not be good.

I'm pretty sure that is how it's going to work. It's "Reserve for pick up on April 3rd"...not April 4th, 5th, or 6th.

And your indignation would almost be convincing except for the part where you haven't given them any money. :)

You have a pickup window, if you miss it they're not going to hold that item indefinitely.

Haha great point...that didn't even cross my mind. Apple is actually being pretty nice about holding these even until 3pm seeing how they have no received any money from anyone who did an in-store pick up.

I understand the concept. However in that example you would have people who reserved the iPad online getting their iPads after people who just walked up. (IE reserved iPad customers 201-300 would still be waiting for theirs after walkup iPad customers 1-200 and reserved iPad customers 1-200 have purchased theirs simultaneously)

Not the most elegant way to treat your most loyal customers who preordered is it?

What if they have two lines? One for Pre-Orders and one for Non-Pre Orders? That may help things...with possibly 3-4 store employees helping in the Pre-Order line while only 1-2 helping the other.

Is it possible that people who didn't Pre-Order will get their hands on an iPad prior to a walk up? Sure...and I don't think it's that unfair. I mean if you pre-ordered and can't make it down to the store until 2pm...does that mean that they shouldn't sell to any walk ups until you get there?

At the AT&T I went to pickup my iPhone 3GS (some random place in Colorado Springs I think? I was out of town) they had two lines, one for reserved iPhones and one for walk-ins. I didn't have any reserved, I just waited and bought my iPhone 3GS 32gb no problem. This will probably be similar to how it works at the Apple Store. If not, then wait for the extras at 3. It is likely that there will be several, as many people went ahead and reserved two sizes because they couldn't make up their mind. I almost did this. I've read about other people doing this too.

I hope you didn't do this and expect to go in on Monday to pick it up, because you will be sorely disappointed.

If I make a reservation for my favorite restaurant for 9:00pm on Friday night, this does not mean I can show up at 8:00pm on Saturday and eat after not showing up on Friday... Unless they have no reservations and nobody else waiting ahead of me.

They already told you point-blank at time of reservation and in the confirmation email that it would be good until 3:00 pm on April 3rd. If you fail to pick up your iPad by that time, your reservation automatically terminates.

Show up on the 4th, 5th, 6th, and you'll be waiting in line for whatever stock they have left.

They no longer let you reserve it online anymore and the ship date for preorders is April 12th now, so I'm assuming they have either sold out or they are controlling the stock to gauge interest.

I wouldn't be surprised....the iPad popularity of this device has sky rocketed since this week.

It's marketing 101. Create the illusion of scarcity to drive demand. Nothing like the fear of not being able to get an iPad to make you want one even more!

Except that any scarcity that may arise on launch weekend is just a blip on the radar...there's no reason for anyone to fear not being able to get one. A delay of a week or two is hardly motivating for a customer on the fence.

It's not an illusion of scarcity. It's just strong sales. Lots of things sell out their first shipments when they're anticipated items, even things as mundane as kitchen appliances.
