I got this idea from the new Gmail feature that is designed to prevent drunken e-mails to ex-girlfriends and such. Someone should create an App designed to prevent drunken text messages to certain contacts in the phone from like 11pm to 4am (when the owner is most likely to be drunk).

Here's how it would work: If the user wants to text or call (or e-mail for that matter) a certain contact during the above mentioned times, they would be prompted to answer a series of math problems or simple questions that any sober person could answer, but a drunk person is likely not to be able to answer. For example 44+32 makes perfect sense to a sober person. A drunk person is likely to complain "da*n, my phone is making me do math problems like I'm in algebra. Speaking of algebra, I hate my professor. I sit next to this totally hot girl in that class though so it's ok." Major embarrassment saved because normally he would have just dialed the number to that person.

This would prevent drunk dialing or booty calls and waking up the next morning regretting begging "that hot girl from my floor freshman year" to come to your party so you could try to get with her.

And for those of you that think I'm being sexist, I'm not. Girls do their fair share of "booty calls" and "drunk dialing". This App. would equally benefit both sexes.

There is one major flaw with this plan: It will work too well. People will think it's a great idea when their sober and download it (for a $5 fee maybe). However, after it works once or twice people might get frustrated because "their chances of getting laid are totally decreased" by the App.

Just think of the positive benefits of this.... STDs and unwanted pregnancy would decrease! To all you developers out there, you are irresponsible if you DON'T create this App!

For the record, I'm not promoting promiscuous sex or anything. It's a reality that happens everyday, so don't freak out on me saying that this is morally irresponsible or something...

You cannot be serious...

Yeah, I'm mostly kidding about the STD and unwanted pregnancy thing, but I do think this App. would be successful and make money. All it needs is a catchy name and college students across the country would buy it. If nothing else, for the humor of it. Something to download and show friends and laugh about it. It's like those jokes that are only funny because they are so astonishingly true.

What about people like me who go to attended schools that were predominantly engineering based? I was drunk a good portion of my last semester, but it never prevented me from doing math...:D

You have nothing to worry about, being from an engineering school means that you will have no girls numbers to call while drunk :D

Even if this wasn't a ridiculous idea, an app can't prevent another app from functioning, so you can't hijack or stop the SMS app (or any other app). Possibly on a jailbroken phone, but that's it.

Why not just create a hardware attachment called the iBreathalyzer? You have to blow a sober number to text or call anyone, otherwise the phone simply presents the user with trippy images that make them think they have used acid or the like.

plus this wouldn't work because the person would just become frustrated and delete the app

The App. could be like an alarm clock; you could choose to turn it on or off depending on what they plan to be doing after they drink. If a person is likely to be in a situation in which they may call or text someone they probably shouldn't, they can choose to turn it on. On the other hand, if a person is going to be up all night studying for finals, they could choose not to turn it on.

Also, the point of this App. would mostly be a novelty. Sure, it could actually work to save people some embarrassing phone calls or texts, but mostly it would be something to show friends and laugh about.

Unfortunately I don't think this app would work with the current SDK rules. I don't think it can in any way restrict access to the SMS application. It would have been cool though lol :D

and yet in 6 or so years he will be rich and successful, with many girls to call, and you will be having a hard time convincing them to come back to your 1 room apartment

You're probably right, but how would this be any different than a password protection on the phone? Is the only difference that the password protection is native to the phone (put there by Apple) and this App. would be a third-party App.? In essence, this App. would be locking the phone and only allowing access to the owner if he/she can answer some simple questions (simple for a sober person anyway).
