This guy is defnitely a genious... How can one person be so good at this? Haha, I wouldn't even know where to begin!

This is proof of concept. Geohot has found a way to crash the 5.11.07 baseband using a public AT command, and has been able to inject his own code into the baseband. This is the exploit everyone has been waiting for, and it means the new baseband will almost certainly be unlocked at some point.
This doesn't mean the unlock is imminent, however; there are many hours of coding ahead, which still might take weeks or even months (depending largely on whether Geo tries to code the whole thing himself or works with/gives his exploit to some other team -- as he did with the exploit that led to ultrasn0w).
In either case, George Hotz is a genius and we should all be very thankful to him. Resale value on my 3GS has just more than doubled, and I pledge 10% of that to Geohot when I sell it.

No kidding! I was going to switch to Sprint and get the Hero. I figured I'd just keep my 3G as I had already upgraded the baseband, but now I'm not so sure... Maybe I'll sell it now unlocked. (Although GPS is the best aspect of all the apps IMO)

Yeah, Geohot is brilliant. Not only was he the first person to unlock the 2G, he discovered the injection vector that led to the first soft unlock for the 3G, was the first person to jailbreak the 3GS and the first person to release a jailbreak for 3.1 official. Now he seems to have found an exploitable weakness in 5.11.07.

Blackra1n jailbreaks your iphone and blacksn0n unlocks the carrier so you can use it on another network..

Yes, that guy is a genius, but misguided. Bill Gate would love to have him as his son except that he's a hacker now and that's a no no in Bill's mind. Unless Bill hire him to destroy Apple's iPhone/iPod while improving the Zune. LOL.

People like him are very valuable to companies actually. I don't see how he's misguided. He makes products better for people. If Apple wanted they could even hire him to find the holes before anyone else so they could patch them. But he'd rather have a phone that he can use.
Also... that's not true. Anyone can learn to be really good at a task. Genius, in my mind, is a level of understanding beyond just learning. I'm sure if you spent the amount of time he has on trying to hack the iPhone you'd be nowhere.

Most ridiculous thing I ever heard. Most companies would go crazy to hire this guy (especially security auditing companies). Not for ability to jailbreak per se - but it clearly demonstrates remarkable ability on his end.
You don't have to have money either. Bill Gates and Jobs started with nothing and look at them now.
