I use the stock swipe keyboard.

When switching to German, I've learnt to replace umlauts with the letter "e" as one used to do on old keyboards with no accents. For example, to type "möchten" I would swipe "moechten". Easy. However, how do I swipe ß?

I just tried swiping German in the Translate app and it seems to find the ß automatically if the word is spelled with a ß in the dictionary. When it doesn't, I think you'd have to manually insert a ß using the standard iOS keyboard technique of stopping and holding the letter until the accents pop up, then selecting the ß.

The iPhone German keyboard also has a dedicated ö key.

Thanks for checking. Yeah, it does seem to find it automatically in words, which is good enough for me. I don't know why it didn't seem to work for me when I tried it earlier - I must have been doing something wrong.

Normally if you swipe the keyboard knows if it should be an "ß", "ä", "ö", "ü".
Manually just push the "s" longer to see the "ß" - same with "a" showing "ä" etc.

I'm learning the language, so often use an app (Leo) to look up words. With no context, the swipe keyboard needs me to help it along. As I already learnt, swiping an "e" after a vowel requiring an umlaut works perfectly. Plus, as you (and chabig already had) posted, it can often work out the "s" vs "ß" even if I don't do it manually.

As an aside, I'm in Switzerland where they don't use ß anyway, so at least for writing I can just "ss" it.
