I have a special 20% off on a brand new 6-core Mac Pro. I do some photo editing and video editing, but in no rush to get a new computer.

Is the 6-core Mac Pro worth it considering I get 20% off, or should I wait if something new comes along?

Considering the options you can get with a classic Mac Pro or a Hackintosh, I'd say the new Mac Pro is only really "worth it" at ~50% off.

Based on historical update timetables the Mac Pro is due, but who knows.
Considering the standard refurb price is 15% off I don't think you are missing out by waiting.
Refurbs might get a bit cheaper when new models are released too.

hmmmm...never actually considered that option. Thanks man! I guess I'll wait then.

But, of course, nobody buys it to strip it down and sell the components... It's all well and good to suggest an old used Mac or a Hack, but there are strong downsides to each that the average user needs to seriously consider. Not everybody makes a hobby out the computer--most people get more enjoyment out of what they use it for, rather than what they use.

If you want a new Mac, get one. Only you know your finances, your needs, your wants, and what you will enjoy using.

Nonsense.

There will be a new Mac Pro. The fact that it's missing from the 'Mac' page on the Apple site is no doubt purely due to the fact that it doesn't command the same sales numbers as the other products.
I know that I'm over reacting. Just reading that website kinda gives me that willy. If you read it, doesn't it make you think like you want to know what's going on?

I wouldn't call this 'missing'

my 20% off coupon ends today. I don't want a 27" iMac, and I'm thinking of the Mac Pro. Since Refurbs are at 15% discount, I'll wait. I'm sure even if the Mac Pro team has changed, Apple will update it. We all thought the old Mac Pro was going to be the last one, until they came up with this beauty.

I know the Mac Pro is overpriced for its components, but it's about the whole packaging and experience.

Thank you all for your suggestions

You don't say what you have now, or use it for.... for me, even though the cMP was prptype in 2005 and we had this same hand-wringing from 2009-2013, which was met with "finally" and ended in a ho-hum, buying some parts and throwing together a PC or cMP works... adding ram, ssd, changing out gpu, so it is only a matter of processor that is "extra."

Off the shelf vs something "blessed" with OS X and Apple logo... no longer worth as I find myself using Windows 10 now full-time.

I assume the coupon is not through Apple directly? Or could you use the 20% off on a refurb? :)

The nMP is a beautiful piece of engineering, if you can justify it, that's cool. But yeah, if you don't -need- it, at this point I'd say waiting is the better idea.

If you read the article more carefully...he said "may" have been disbanded. This of course, coming from an insider who "claims" to know inside information about this team. Not really verifiable. Apple has been known to move teams around to work on different projects.
my bad...yes it's may.

I purchased my nMP 6 months after the release date. I, like several others, made the mistake of focusing on some of the negative comments. This was followed by the greatly exaggerated expectations that an update/graded nMP would occur the follow year.

The best decision I made was to pull the trigger. To date, I've had the benefit of one hell of a fast and efficient machine. If you have a "special" take advantage of it.

Now for my opinion...as we all have one. The next major update will occur with the incorporation of TB3. Between now and then there will more than likely be bumps in the performance. And yes, you will continue to hear from the same people about how the previous model or hack'n sack system is/was better. Keep in mind, they exist on every forum.

Best of luck with your decision my friend.

If you really like nMP and you have this discount:

I would absolutely recommend to get it now, the update of it is still unknown so its pricing list, of course there will be other options from other manufacturers using other OS, but you won't find anywhere anything like this one.
It may not be on the edge of the current tech but it's still a very very good machine, especially for photo work and video it is a real champ, and imho better than an iMac, no comparison in thermals etc.

:)We needed and bought a second one a few days ago... even if we 're waiting - speculating for its second edition.
I repeat, it's really a great machine...

Broadwell-E is due in Q1 of 2016. Since I don't think there will be a 2011-3 variant a new Mac Pro release is likely somewhere around feb/march 2016.

We have to wait for the new Xeons to filter through before Apple will build an updated nMP. If these chips become readily available and other technologies such as thunderbolt 3 are all available and there still isn't an update, then its safe to say that it will be quietly forgotten by Apple. I don't expect a big fanfare if it is updated, they just don't sell enough of them for that, but it will become a dead product if there is no update in the next 6 months. Apple after all did promise more frequent updates so we should expect something within the next 6 months. The Dell Precisions and HP Z's will all be updated within this timescale.
