So i saw everyones post looking for a place to buy a new mac mini to avoid the tax issue. WELL i stumbled upon it on amazon and it was only up for a brief time. but i added it to my cart and the link still works to order! mine has already shipped tax free for only $594.00 . So i have the link here for everyone to enjoy. only the expensive model appears in the search results. here ya go. cheers

well, for most people it is tax free. and if you have amazon prime or a free trial of amazon prime, its always tax free. so i hope this helps someone!
 
That's not accurate. Amazon charges tax in some states and not in others. Amazon Prime has nothing to do with tax. Amazon Prime deals with shipping and several other benefits.
 
I would have ordered from Amazon, but you can't get the 2.7 GHz non-server model from them, unfortunately.
 
As already mentioned Prime has nothing to do with tax and offers expedited shipping. You will still get charged tax on Amazon depending on which state you live in. If you live in a state where there is no sales tax then you won't have to pay it on Amazon.

Which is basically why I rarely consider buying big ticket items on Amazon, it's silly to pay sales tax over mail order. I've thought about getting my mailbox over in MO which is just a few miles from here, I'm in KS.

Legally you are still required to pay the sales tax in your home state.(Though no one ever does) Amazon is only required to collect the sales tax from states it has a physical presence in. However, a lot of states are trying to pass laws to have amazon collect the sales tax regardless.

The state of Illinois now is trying to have its residents pay sales tax on items that were purchased on-line where tax was not paid. I came across this fun little tidbit when doing taxes this year.

However, Apple does charge 6.25% sales tax to residents of Illinois (this isn't just for shipped items, but things like MobileMe renewal is also subject to taxes).

Amazon Prime does not correlate to whether or not you pay taxes on an item. If Amazon has presence in the state you live in or if there is already something set up where they charge tax with your order then you pay taxes. If not, you're supposed to claim it on your taxes when you do file. You're seriously misguided if you think a Prime membership has anything to do with taxes
