Hi,

There are a several apps on the store for runners, and a few specifically aimed at helping you start to run.

Why start to run? So you can look like those crazy eyed people that lumber past when you're trying to have a nice walk, of course! That was pretty much my opinion until I decided I needed to get fitter and gave it a go. It turns out to actually be a pretty sweet way to get yourself fit and stay there. It's inexpensive, it's outdoors, and it does leave you feeling excellent.

Getting started running is often a stumbling block for people though, as the idea of just going out and running for half an hour is mind boggling if you're not already able to do that. I know of three applications in the store that will help you get through this phase and to the point where you can run for about half an hour. They're all based on the wildly popular "Couch to 5K" running plan that was first created by Josh Clark (author of the recent "Best iPhone Apps"):

The first one is created by me and some other smashing folks. I think it's easily the best because:

● it's got hundreds of really nicely recorded prompts and cues to encourage you on, and let you know when to walk or run, and how much longer you need to keep going for,
● it's got a sweet log of your runs that includes the dates for future runs.
● it's got a rather gorgeous "clock" for each run.
● it works properly when your phone sleeps or is locked, and works with or without iPhone music playing in the background.

And that's about it :) Hope this'll be of some use, and will inspire you to get out there and get yourself moving! I'm going to give away some promo codes on the code sub forum.

Thanks for reading!

Do you by chance have an app that promotes maybe a slow crawl? That's more my speed.

Hmm - I could adjust the data files and throw that one off to Apple for review. Do you think it's got a good market? Or you could just use "Get Running", but _imagine_ it's saying:

"Breath deeply and relax now for two minutes", and "Crawl now for a minute, but not too fast mind",

instead of:

"Walk now for two minutes" and "Start running again now, you've got 1 minute to go".

But - you could just give it a go, you know :) The first three runs only need you to run for a minute, eight times, with a good walk between each run. And frankly, if you want it easier than that, then just stop after the fourth run. Or the second. Or the first!

:) Cheers!

I would really benefit from something like this. I've been in shape for many years and have decided to take a snooze from it for a while and it's made me lazy of course. Which one would you choose? Any ideas? I'd like to get one ASAP. Thanks.

I'd go for Get Running, for sure. I put some free codes for it in the Code Sharing area, in this post: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/769321/ - apparently they've all gone, so I'll bung some more up there.

Again, thanks for sharing the codes with us benjohn!

Although I can't really comment on the effectiveness of the program yet, I think the app looks really nice and does exactly what the description says. I have to say though that while I think this app is really good for people without GPS enabled devices (iPod Touch and iPhone 2G), for 3G and 3GS owners an app like Runkeeper is the better choice because it offers so many more features and if people would take a little time they could even manually put the couch-to-5k program in the app themselves.

Overall I rated this app with 3 stars in the app store: an average of 4 stars for iPod Touch and iPhone 2G owners and 2 stars for iPhone 3G and 3GS owners.
