So I am getting a MacBook Pro soon, been a Windows user all my life. Now I have an external SSD formatted in exFAT. I know the MacBook will be able to read those files but when I copy them to my laptop's SSD, will they be automatically be converted into the MacOS File system and work just fine?

Also, when I copy a file from my Mac to the external SSD, what file format would they be? Also exFAT since the SSD is formatted in exFAT format?

Howdy. They will work just fine, no file conversion.

Don't confuse file extensions with file systems.

Drives, or more specifically volumes or partitions on drives, are formatted (or initiated). But not the files themselves.

Yes, exFAT is probably the best cross-platform file system for external drives. Yes, you can move files back and forth between Macs, Win, and other OSes.

The files themselves will not change though. Assuming you have the correct application to open the files....there is nothing else to worry about.

Enjoy your new Mac!
