is that a refurb? or a custom configured version? or a different store?

usually apple overcharges for the memory (which you can upgrade yourself) and a lot of people around here recommend getting a pure SSD.

yes its a custom configured version from online on apple.com

i would install the ram myself but not sure if it voids the warrenty

what would you suggest sites i use i trying owc but it looks to be within 100 or 200$$ of apple for ram
Fine, fine.

Here are the prices for storage options:
Fusion Drive 2TB 0 (base)
Fusion Drive 3TB +100
512 GB SSD +200
1TB SSD +600
2TB SSD +1400

Here are the prices for memory
8 GB 0 (base)
16 GB +200
32 GB +600
64 GB +1400

OWC sells memory for the following prices

24 GB $168
32 GB $318
64 GB $628

so if you really wanted 32 GB of RAM, you'd save $282.

which would pay for a 512 GB SSD (and external hard disk of 3 or 4 TB)

yes, yes a 512 GB SSD is a lot smaller than a 2TB Fusion Drive. But it's a lot faster.

many thanks for the layout and price comparison thanks

I second the above recommendation: Get the 512 SSD instead of the fusion and the extra RAM. Buy more RAM if and when needed from Amazon, etc. (there are threads on this elsewhere).

Get an external drive (e.g. Samsung T5, etc.) for more space when you need it.

Got our iMacs on early Black Friday special at B&H. Got them for $2549 each, no tax, no shipping

2017 27" 5K
4.2Ghz CPU
580 GPU
8GB memory
512GB SSD

Separately I ordered 16GB of Crucial memory for the iMacs. I installed the memory before initial boot up. Zero problem using 24GB.

I got an SSD for internal storage because of the significant performance boost. Also only need a 512 size to handle MacOS, boot, apps, caches...etc. Still have around 200GB left. All my libraries of documents, videos, photos..etc are external RAID drives. My stuff would never fit on a 3TB fusion drive.

So far both the wife and I are happy with the move from 2013 rMBP to 2017 iMacs. We are mostly doing photo editing with a variety of apps such as Lightroom, Luminar, ....etc.
