Trying to update to iPad OS 16.1 using iTunes on My Windows Computer. Before anyone tells me why am I trying to update the iPad OS this way, for every New iPad OS I do it through iTunes like for e.g. from iPad OS 13 to 14 to 15 and now 16 but in between I do it OTA. So I am trying to update it in iTunes it keeps saying that the OS is 15.7 which is up to date there is no update available. But in the iPad in Software Update section I see iPad OS 16.1 update available as a voluntary update. I see this time Apple has not made it compulsory to update to iPad OS 16 for people who want to stay on iPad OS 15.7 they can do so. So the Update is not a forced, compulsory update on everyone.

So it is showing as a Voluntary update in the iPad but not in iTunes. What do I do ? Can anyone think of a solution ? I want to update the OS through iTunes only.

Thanks !

Thanks for the link, but I don't think I would want to update offline using a file outside the system or iTunes.

Look at the download links. They're direct from apple.com plus they're cryptographically signed so tamper proof.

You need to Update your iTunes to let it find latest iOS version. If your iTunes is the latest version, then you might need to wait for a few days before iTunes showing up there’s an update.

Yes I think that looks like the issue I will have to wait. I cannot to the latest version of iTunes which Apple just released yesterday as I am on a older version of windows which does not support the latest version of iTunes. Quite a chicken-egg situation I must say :-(

You can use a virtual machine with newer version of windows to go around the issue if you don’t want to use newer version long term.
I‘ve been using OTA for a few years now and that allows me to use a very old version of iTunes to download apps IPA file.

It is not that I dont want to use a newer version of Windows, just that I have an old Windows Laptop and the Hardware it has does not support newer version of Windows beyond Windows 8

This Virtual Machine workaround that you talked about would require a rental fees right ?

Oh, you mean older hardware.

That virtual Machine workaround doesn’t need any rental fees. VMware workstation is a popular software to build one of these. Other options include Virtualbox or a more tech savvy choice that is QEMU, both of which are free to use.

You do need to install virtual machine on newer hardware though, for newer version of Windows. Rest assured, virtual machine is isolated from the rest of your system, as long as you don’t enable file share Or let it connect to your home network.

So you mean to say even to use a Virtual Machine using VMWARE or Virtualbox I would need someone else's Windows Computer which can support it ? right ? It cannot be done on my Older Hardware Computer right ?

Well, newer version of Windows requires more recent hardware. You can check microsoft website to see if your old computer can be upgraded to Windows 10, or you can see if there are hacks available to install windows 10 on your old computer. That, if successful, can eliminate the need to install virtual machine.

Of course, you always have the option to OTA install latest iOS and iPadOS version. Installing through iTunes doesn’t really offer too much benefit over OTA nowadays except when your device is disabled or you forgot your passcode.

Hey you know what ? Looks like I am able to download the iPad OS 16.1 update file. Looks like I will have the file but older iTunes wont let me update it without newer version of iTunes. What are my available options in such a scenario even when I have the OS update file installed on my Computer ?

Another option is to use third party tools, but they too also use part of iTunes to perform relevant actions so I won’t put too much Hope on that.

Can you hack your way into installing windows 10? If you are willing To learn to use dism, maybe you can give it a shot.
You can easily obtain latest version of DISM through https://uupdump.net/ And boot your computer into Windows PE. There, you could try to install windows 10 using command prompt.
I unfortunately don’t have an old enough computer to test.

Otherwise, you would be better off using someone else’s newer computer to do this iTunes installing iOS thing. Or, install through OTA.

There are APPS like iMazing which lets you Manually select and upload a ipsw file if you have one and that way you can update your iOS/iPad OS device. But it is paid. Does anyone know a free APP which can let you do that ?
