I've never been able to get a three-way call to work on my iPhone--and now I know why!
I'd hit Add Call and call the other person, but I was never able to Merge Calls. I could switch between the two calls, but I couldn't connect all three of us together. Too bad I didn't test this BEFORE I set up a business conference call! Kind of embarrassing--and it makes you think the iPhone's not working.
Then I read somewhere online that AT&T had messed up 3-way calling for a lot of iPhone customers--they had the feature disabled even though it's supposed to be part of the iPhone plan. And that seems to be what happened to me.
I called AT&T (6-1-1) to ask if 3-way calling was enabled on my plan, and they checked and said yes it was. Then they started to transfer me to an iPhone technician (Apple maybe?) but before they got there they found the problem. They said that in "another application" my 3-way calling was NOT enabled. They fixed it on the spot, and now after many months, I seem to have 3-way calling ability
So if you can't get 3-way calls to work, be aware that AT&T seems to have two different places in their system they need to check, to be sure the feature is active.
(I don't know how many iPhone users have been affected, but I thought this info might help others, since searching these forums didn't turn up much. FWIW, my iPhone plan was activated in August 2008. I just didn't get around to pursuing the issue until now.)
