Getting data off iPhone with dead screen

Hi,

My son just dropped my iPhone 6s Plus and now the screen is covered with flickering horizontal and vertical banding lines and is unresponsive. The screen is not actually physically damaged from the outside but I assume the screen controller or similar has become disconnected or damaged internally.

If someone calls me the phone rings but I'm unable to answer.

If I plus the phone into charge it seems to be charging.

If I plug the phone into my Mac is just makes it's little buzzing noise and I assume is asking me for the passcode which I am unable to enter. I have restarted my phone since I last backed up

In typical fashion I haven't backed up in a while so am very keen to get some of the data off the phone.

Priorities are...

1) Photos / videos
2) Notes
3) Contacts / Text Messages / WhatsApp messages etc

TBH if I could just get the photos/videos I'd be happy.

Can anyone help me out with a solution please?

There seems to be quite a lot of backup / recovery software options but none that I've found seem to have very good reviews.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

It seems to me that only the phone screen is damaged as iTunes can detect the device. You can actually repair the whole screen without fear of data erased. As soon as the screen is replaced, you can then proceed to back-up your data.

This happened to my iPhone before and I just replaced the screen. You can choose to DIY the replacement or have a tech do it for you.

When I connect the phone to the Mac, iTunes doesn't start up. The phone buzzes likes it's asking for the pass code or whether to "trust the device" but I seem to remember that iTunes would normally start up automatically? Is that the case? I can't remember the exact sequence of events when connecting the phone previously.

If your iTunes has been set to "sync automatically", it will automatically open up once an iPhone that has been synced is plugged into the Mac. If the computer has been "trusted", it won't ask for a passcode anymore. I'm not so sure about this but if your home button is working, then a saved fingerprint can unlock the device.
