I'm at a loss as to how to generate inbound links for my site beyond registering on free directories relating to my business. Where can I find good advice on this?

depending on what your business is/budget there are a few options.

A good free way to advertise is to create a facebook page and start adding friends from groups which are likely to be interested. Obviously though if your business doesn't fit in with this then you have the opportunity to go out and advertise on related websites, google or go to an online advertisement publisher like adbrite.com to help you target ads.

you could also ask your customers to help spread the word if they enjoyed the product/service, even consider offering a referral scheme.

Its really dependent on the type of product your selling. I wouldn't waste your time with free directories too much (apart from very famous ones like yellow pages or something).
