Getting Mail to work while Wireless

I'm running Mail at home, and it works great with my Airport network at home (even with dialup! hah). But my problem is when I'm on the road or at work...

While at work I connect to the companies wireless network. I can purchase tracks from iTunes, browse the web, use iChat, but when I try and use Mail - well, it doesnt work. Same when I was using a wireless hotstop in NYC (Bryant Park) or at Borders (on their T-Mobile hot spot).

Is there a place where I can change my Mail settings to rememedy this? I can't seem to find it

What doesn't work about it? Can you receive mail but not send it? Can you not receive at all?

Your problem probably lies in the fact that your ISP recognizes your IP as a local one and gives you full control of the smtp and pop servers (or IMAP). When you are not on the network you need to setup either a VPN into the local ISP that you use for mail or use password authentication to the servers. Ask your ISP about it, they should have an answer for you.

I have a University of Florida smtp server that I cannot use when I'm on Bellsouth DSL at home, and a Bellsouth smtp server that I can only use when on the DSL. So I have to either change my smtp preferences every time I go from wired to wireless and vice versa, or I get the error message on send and I have to re-send using another server. Fortunately both of them do allow external @.... addresses. But it is kinda a nuisance....

I use Entourage X - by clicking Tools/Accounts I have set up a "home" and "travel" account that allows me to use a different SMTP server when I'm on the road.

Details -

At home, I have a cable modem and use their mail and smtp servers to receive and send mail. No worries.

When traveling - if the hotel I'm staying at has wired or wireles Internet service I can almost always use the "home" setting. There are few places that require me to change to their smtp server for sending mail.

If the place has dial up only, I use Earthlink and switch to the "travel" account which is already preset with the Earthlink smtp authorizations. When using the "travel" setting, there is a drop down on the "TO" line of the email window and I chose "travel" which then uses the alternative smtp server to send.

Another easy - but inferior - solution for when you are not home is to simply use the web-based mail access virtually all ISPs provide.

What does't work? Well - I can't receive or send mail from it. Pooey.

Of course, I can use my .Mac account and just check it on the web, but I'd love to keep everything nice and clean... looks like I won't be able to

Dot-Mac handles the SMTP issues effortlessly. I've actually used it to send and receive e-mail on the Bryant Park wireless network. (For those who don't know, Bryant Park in Manhattan is a free wireless hotspot.)

Hey,
Do you use the mail provided by your ISP at home? If so, it would make sense that it wouldn't work anywhere other than at home. Check with them, they may have some additional authentication that you can set Mail to do so that you can roam and still use their mail. Comcast allows you to do this, for example.

You are lucky that your Mail even works. My ISP is Earthlink with a wireless setup for my wife. Mail program won't work at all, just bounces in the Dock or if it does open no mail, and then have to do a force quit. So I'm using Entourage, works great. Not sure that I will ever return to Mail.
