I have a 15" MBP from 2 years ago. I also have a Dell 24" Ultrasharp monitor plugged into it to use for a second monitor. When I shut the lid it flashes but the Dell stays on....it eventually goes into powersave mode but I want my OS to go to sleep and then prompt for a password. This just started happening a few weeks ago. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's supposed to do that. Thats a new feature in Mountain Lion.

You can always sleep it from the Apple-menu or with the shortcut Alt-Cmd-Eject and then close the lid of the computer, if you prefer.

So the only way to make it ask for a password upon my return is manually?

I think he's saying that is how you get the OS to go to sleep. If you have it set to prompt for a password on wakeup then it will prompt regardless of how sleep was entered.

I find that if I pull the power cord when my rMBP has the lid closed then it goes to sleep right away. Even if I have external monitors attached. Have you tried taking it off power before closing the lid? Once it goes to sleep you can re-attach the cord.

Of the simple answer is to just put it to sleep using the Apple menu or the power button.

I now have it setup to a hotkey in the top right of the screen for sleep. It does it fine but sometimes when I come back into my office the fan on the MBP is screaming...not like it's malfunctioning just running pretty loud...I log back into my MBP and the fan slowly dies down to dead quiet. Why would it run while sleeping? I've checked the power settings and have it set to computer sleep and display sleep after 15 mins on AC power. What gives?
