Getting my apps back (the prodigal iPhone user)

Okay - so I had an iPhone...and got really mad about the google voice diss during the summer....so I sold it and got an Android phone...after a few months with it I've decided it's completely inferior despite offering up google voice service...so I'm going back to the iPhone...but here's my question...how do I get back my old apps (the ones I paid for...obviously the free ones I just re-download)

To make matters worse I downloaded these apps over two different Apple IDs...I know with the new software I can switch back and forth between IDs in the app store...but will it allow me to re-download apps if I've already purchased them? I'd hate to have to spend more money to re-download them...
 
Can't you just sync the new iPhone and add the apps or restore from backup in iTunes?

That aside, you can re-download previously purchased items at no additional cost, I've done it several times.
 
Make sure you know which apps you bought with which accounts before you hit the buy button. If you've already purchased it from the account you're signed into then you won't be charged, but if you haven't you'll be charged.

If you don't have iTunes receipts to check the purchases on each account then just attempt to review the apps in iTunes. If you haven't bought the app with that account it won't let you leave a review, so you'll know you bought it with the other account.
 
All you do is log in to one account thru the iPhones AppStore and download all the apps you paid for before. Then log out and log in to the second account and grab the other paid apps. It will let you download them for free if you bought them before.

jailbreak to get the google voice back. then d/l some pirated app to spite apple lol j/k

but like others have said, you can sign into you itunes account and view your previous purchasing history on itunes. then just redownload them for free.
 
I know, I know - it was a rash decision...and I made it sight unseen on the HTC Hero...I just *thought* it was equal to the iPhone because a bunch of nerd blogs said it was ... not true!

So unrelated question...I had googled a bit before on how to jailbreak the iPhone and get the cydia store with GVMobile...can anyone point me to a good website for this...does it work on the latest (3.1.2 I believe?) software that is more than likely going to come preloaded on my new iPhone?

Considering it's such a silly reason to switch, and considering you could've just jailbroken and gotten GV or even just used GV through the web interface, I'd say you got exactly what you deserved.

Eghh...ugh...way to be a dick...? It's *not* a stupid reason for leaving the iPhone...I'm still pretty PO about coming back to the iPhone...but it's the only phone that's fast enough...when the android hardware catches up in a half year or so then we'll have a real competition...but the handsets out now are junk...not really google's fault.

My point is, that because of a single app not being available through normal channels, you threw away everything else, and now you're trying to get it back. And now you're saying it's begrudgingly so? This isn't going to end well.
 
This is the problem with fanboys **cough** and republicans **cough** - everything has to be black and white...

Why can't I come back to the iPhone admitting "Yeah, it's the best phone that's out there now." While also allowing the separate thought "Hey, the app store policy sucks because it's not letting me use the apps I want." (I had already bought GVMobile before it became inoperable without jailbreaking).

Why must everything be so stark...seriously, the app store policy is crap...the iPhone is the smartest of the current smartphones...really people, these two facts can coexist.

Yes it's terrible that you can't have everything you want when you want it, isn't it? The never of someone saying "no". How dare phone companies that make money off selling phone service, don't want to make it easy for you to avoid using their phone service.

I weep for our future.

Here's another thought for you, yes in half a year Android might be better, but your assumption also assumes that the iPhone and it's OS will just remain the same, wrong.
 
Trust me...between myself and Apple, I'm not the petulant one in all of this. Trying another device doesn't make me a "cry baby" and coming back doesn't mean anything other than accepting the fact that I need a phone that works and currently android does not.

And as far as Android goes it *is* better - I love the openness and customizability of the OS...it lacks in only two areas:

1) App store (which was not an issue for me, I had all the apps I needed, didn't need 10 fart apps)

2) The hardware - this is where it fell apart...those phones (yes, even the droid) are just awful...the design is bad enough, but I can put up with it...but the SLOWNESS...UGH THE SLOWNESS!

So ummm...well...bottom line - stop blindly defending apple - they pay PR people for that.
 
What does the fact of openness do for you? You don't even have the basic knowledge to jailbreak an iPhone, let alone develop using their open OS structure. The great openness will get you a bunch of crap apps that will most likely slow down and crash your phone that's what you'll get. Openness isn't all that its cracked up to be. I guess you heard some talking heads say that phrase.

So it has crap hardware, and no apps, and is slow, sounds great to me.

I'm not a fanboy, just able to use common sense. How about stop blindly following and regurgitating things that you obviously don't understand
 
First, I know how to jailbreak my phone...I did not want to when I thought switching to Android was an acceptable alternative. Now that I'm coming back to the iPhone you can be damn sure I'm jailbreaking it.

Second - ummm...what's not to like about openness? I can install apps from either the market or an apk directly downloaded to the device...no parental figure hovering over me saying "No, no...we don't want you to play with that app".

It's really insulting actually the way Apple runs the app store...I mean yes, keep out the broken apps, the malicious apps and the resource hogs (this is not yet a problem on Android, but will be) - but for the love of god, don't keep out apps just to be vindictive.

Do they have the right - as in absolute legal right to do this? Yes (currently at least, let's see net neutrality give this sort of crap a kick in the pants). That doesn't mean they should - it's petty, obnoxious, and really in the end just silly.

You do do you? Sounds like it.

Yes no parental figure making sure that they work, if you don't like their system, go somewhere else. It makes me laugh all these people that flock to Apple because there old crap doesn't work right, and they then want Apple to adopt the model which is mostly responsible for their crap not working. Apple stuff is reliable because they control everything, it's that simple. So if you don't want Apple to control it jailbreak it and live with the issues or find a product that meets your needs and stop being a whiner.
 
Yes actually - I've done that bit of googling myself now that no one else replied...I was just being a bit lazy and wanted someone to link me to a straight step-by-step walkthrough.

But it's simple enough that - yes, now I can do it myself. Could I write the code that exploits the hack? Hell no, but then I imagine you couldn't either. And either way, it doesn't so much matter because what I said before was correct and you're just on some sort of righteous crusade for apple.
 
It's really not a righteous crusade for Apple, its' a righteous crusade against the spoiled, whiners that think they have a right to have someone else provide them with everything their little heart desires, just like their mommies and daddys did all their life.
 
Regarding jailbreak, if you are getting a new 3GS now, most likely you will have to make do with a tethered jailbreak. Read about it here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/833099/

You'd need to use blackra1n to jailbreak your iPhone, you can google that, and iClarified has good tutorials on jailbreaking.
 
First of all, my parents have nothing to do with anything. It's irrelevant if I'm spoiled because of them or not (for the record, I am not - they are poor and I've worked since I was 15 years old putting myself through school...but like I said irrelevant).

Second, it's not spoiled to want GVMobile on the iPhone...it *WAS* on the app store, I bought it and then it was removed. A change in Google Voice protocol killed the app - which was updated, but the only way to get the update was to jailbreak. I chose not to do that an opted for the android. In hindsight that was a mistake - I should have just jailbroken the phone then and there.

However none of that makes me a spoiled brat as you phrase it. An ad hominem attack against me (be it right or wrong) has nothing to do with the fact that the app store policy is itself wrong.

The people defending apple in this are the same people who when they had their RAZRs would moan about the fact that verizon would only you download games and ringtones from their proprietary stores (and at a huge rate per KB!)...the iPhone was a breath of fresh air...you could download whatever app you wanted - for free mostly! The great number of apps in the store give the illusion that it's not the same walled off system that everyone hated their carriers foisting upon them - but it *is* the same.

This is the 21st century...I should be able to install whatever I bloody well like on whatever device I chose so long as a developer wants to make an app for it. It's not about being spoiled, it's about consumer choice - and when the market won't allow for that choice (as is the case here...I tried the "free market" alternatives and they were subpar) then neutrality rules should step in to make an even playing field for all.

This is all getting a bit annoying because I was on these forums in July when the app was pulled in the first place and the arguments went back and forth the same as they are now...nothing has changed on that front...and I don't expect to change any minds here either. But I do get to air my little outrage and feel slightly better about being led back into the walled garden of the iPhone.
 
The App Store is a walled garden, not the phone. There's no comparision between a jailbroken iPhone and a jailbroken/rooted device running another OS. I bought two Android phones. The hardware (internals) and software (1.x) were terrible.
 
Waiting for Android to catch up. :confused:
That would make Android as good as Last Year's iPhone....which is unlikely anyway.... :D
 
Have you already bought the iPhone? You sound like a perfect candidate for the NexusOne. It may be available in five days.

Also, I thought the iPhone could only connect with one iTunes account? Or is it one computer?

Fortunately I'm neither of those.

However, It must be hard, the plight of the hypocrite who accuses others of seeing only in black and white and yet here you are, taking a stand on something as trivial as a piece of plastic and glass in your hand and what specific series of electrons it happens to operate on. So much so that you tae it personally when one predicts you're just going to get tired of it again, BECAUSE you're taking it so personally.
