A friend of mine is going to give his old non working iphone 2g. The screen is badly cracked and it cant maintian a charge. I suspect that i just need to buy a new batter (8.99) and a new glass screen (12.99). But i have a few questions. First off, im currently not on an att plan, so if i was to register that iphone with itunes, would i be able to take it to the Apple store and ask to buy a new 2g for 250$? Or would it be a better idea to spend 20$ and try to fix it on my own?

It's going to cost more than 20 bucks to fix the old iPhone. You will have to be very careful not to lose any parts when disassembling and reassembling the iPhone and be careful not to damage anything. You may also end up needing a new LCD display as well as a new touch panel/glass which will run you about $160 to $230 depending on where you get it, here and here are some places to get parts. If you did find the complete battery ($16) and touch panel/glass replacement ($125) somewhere for $20 please let me know! BTW, you can't buy just the glass without the digitizer (touch panel) alone. The two parts are glued together and can't be bought nor replaced alone, without the other.

You can no longer take the old iPhone into an Apple store and ask for a new one because you (in this case your friend) cracked the screen. They no longer manufacture/sell the original iPhone 2G.

Alright. Well it seems that my only option will be to buy the battery. The battery is pretty cheap on ebay. Ranging from 9$ to 15$. As far as the glass screen, if done right (seen in this thread https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/423263/) the OEM screen would cost me 20$ or so? Do i have any other options?

Well you'll be paying 35 bucks to try to fix a broken phone that may or may not work and there are some opinions it'll cost you more than that in order for you to have a phone that isn't up to date.

I think you're best bet unless you're poor is to save some money and buy a brand new 8G iphone and then jailbreak it if you want.

Sorry, but I don't have time to read the 4 page thread you linked. If you could sum up the thread you linked above I would gladly comment on that. I would love to help you though. I have seen where people take a piece or 1/8 or 1/16 inch plastic and cut it to fit in the enclosure around the home button and receiver. This could lead to bad results. As long as you only need the glass, then this plastic option sounds good for you. One problem you may run into, though, is separating the glass from the LCD. It should come off easily but if some of the glue is really stuck on there then you must remember to be gentle and not damage anymore parts then are already damaged!
