Hello there first time poster here just asking some questions about the New Mac Pro.
I have been a freelancer for a couple of years mainly making promo videos and short films with budgets. My main issue however is that despite being an editor myself I usually either have to borrow a workstation or rely on my business partner who owns a 3 year old iMac to get any editing done. This has understandably been a massive issue as I am always having to work around other peoples schedules. It also means that I have to travel up to 30 miles to do any type of editing or drop off footage.
I have finally saved £2750 for my own video editing workstation and was thinking of grabbing a near base spec Mac Pro for my editing needs. I was just wondering whether the Mac Pro would be able to suit my needs which is mainly Offline at the moment. I would like to also expand into colour and Online editing so that I can become more self reliant later.
My main editing programs at the moment is Premiere Pro CS6 and Final Cut Pro 7. I haven't really warmed up to FCPX at the moment because I feel as if I should have more controls over what to do with the footage. I can imagine Premiere hasn't been optimized for the architecture yet but I am guessing the standard codec I cut with (50mbps 422 XDCAM) should be fine.
How would this spec stack up for mainly 2k footage?
3.7GHz quad-core with 10MB of L3 cache
16GB (4 x 4GB) of 1866MHz DDR3 ECC
256GB PCIe-based flash storage
Dual AMD FirePro D300 GPUs with 2GB of GDDR5 VRAM each
User's Guide (English)
Would maybe later on this spec be ok for some basic 4k editing or is this merely for the top spec 8 core, d700 setups?
