Getting out of Mobile Me

After the 90 day introductory offer from Mobile Me, I find that I do not need it. Any idea how to get the email portion off my tool bar at bottom of screen and how do I get it to quit searching for mail and reminding me to enter password?

The Mail icon in your Dock can simply be pulled off if you're exited out of the application. To remove the MobileMe account from Mail itself, access your Mail preferences and then go to the accounts tab, select the MobileMe account from the list on the left then hit the "-" sign to remove it. Also access your MobileMe system preferences, select the sign out option. You may also wish to consider opening your Keychain Access application in Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities and deleting the password listed there. Last but not least, sign into http://www.me.com and make sure that in the Account->Summary section your trial isn't set to automatically upgrade at the end.

I also gave MobileMe a chance, but the features and service did not persuade me. Next month the trial period will end and I want to cancel the trial.

How can I get rid of MobileMe from my iPhone without loosing my contacts on the iPhone? If I try to remove the MobileMe account, it tells me that it will wipe all my calendar and contacts... I am running Windows and do not have MS Outlook.

There is an app in the AppStore that makes it nice and easy. I periodically upload my contacts to my funambol account as a backup since I still use a pc and can't bring myself to use Outlook.

I hope someone answers - I chose not to renew my mobile me account, my contacts were wiped on on my iPhone. No problem, I thought, since I have them in my Address Book. Luckily I backed up my address book, cause I have already had to restore twice. I am still having trouble eliminating MobileMe from my system. It keeps telling me that it is going to sync with Yahoo Mail - but in Address Book and iTunes I have the option unchecked. And I have logged out of MobileMe from the control panel. Thanks to the suggestion here, I will check my keychain next...

I solved my issue using the iPhone/iPod application Send Contact. The app enabled me to backup my contacts one by one using E-Mail and to import the contacts later one by one.

I chose this torture, as Send Contact does a perfect copy of a contact including the full size contact picture and all fields.

Synchronization with the Windows Address Book, Google Contacts or Funambol did not properly save all data (either the target did not have the required fields or it modified the data (e.g. the contact picture was downsized)).

I searched the App Store for alternatives before using Send Contact and tried ContactClone, that requires another iPhone/iPod. Sadly it did crash while connecting to the iPod of my girlfriend. This would have been much more comfortable.

I am curious why there aren't any good contact backup/restore applications in the App Store? Doesn't anybody really need such functionallity?
The built-in backup/restore does not work reliably from my point of view and doesn't enable me to do a selective restore. A third party application for contacts would be doable and could let me store my contacts on the device or on a remote location (WebDAV, FTP, ...).
