Hi all,

Ironically, it's no longer possible to get podcasts onto an iPod using older iTunes. I know the topic of downloading and listening to podcasts outside of iTunes on old OS X has been discussed at length elsewhere on this forum, but what about a process for getting the podcasts onto a classic iPod?

My preferred environment is Tiger, but I'll use Leopard if necessary for this. The getting the podcasts via a separate application and manually putting them on the iPod is the easy part. What about updating the metadata so the iPod properly recognizes it as a podcast, its title, episode number, etc?

I'm about to start digging into this on my own but was curious if anyone else has already has some experience here.

Thanks!

Certainly it is frustrating that the iTunes store doesn't connect anymore. I've had success downloading directly from the podcast provider's website and then importing to iTunes, but it is time consuming and clunky.

Time consuming and clunky is what it's all about. You should see my workflow for getting videos from full size to iPod and having them properly tagged an categorized.

'Advanced' menu > 'Subscribe to Podcast...' then enter the URL of the podcast RSS feed.

It works(!) with some but not all feeds.

I had success with this one, for example:

Not actually that clunky.

I found the RSS feed by searching podcastindex.org

Hope it works for you too! IMG_20240921_163608.jpg IMG_20240921_163618.jpg IMG_20240921_163626.jpg IMG_20240921_163642.jpg IMG_20240921_163724.jpg

Is that on Tiger, Leopard, or Sorbet? I would assume that Tiger’s iTunes would encounter TLS related errors.

Tried it on Tiger, on the same machine with the same RSS feed - as you suspected, doesn't work.

Guess its 10.5.8 (or 10.5.9) if you want podcasts on your pod still.

Obvs you can use more modern OSes, still. I like that the iPod actually outlasted iTunes in terms of compatibility with new macs

I bet I could get it working on Tiger. I bet one could compile Nginx or Apache on Macports and set it up to strip HTTPS via reverse proxy and set the system up to use localhost as a HTTP proxy. Then iTunes should be able to connect via http.

Could set up the proxy on any modern remote system but I like the idea of having it all on the Mac.
