I've reserved a WiFi iPad. The rumors are that the iPhone will not tether to the iPad -- a huge pain since I'd only need occasional 3G data and already have a 6GB data plan with Rogers here in Canada. I refuse to buy another data plan only for this little use.
Solution: use mywi but this will need me to jailbreak my iPhone 3GS (so far the only reason I'm considering jailbreaking again).
I've been away from the jailbreak scene for a while. I've updated my knowledge as much as I think I can. I'm not a newbie: I was jailbreaking since the original iPhone and used terminal hacks, etc before any GUI tools. Being out of the scene for a year really makes your head spin!
I'm afraid to jailbreak now due to the usual stability issues, WiFi/connectivity bugs, but I most dread need to tether the iPhone and re-jailbreak if it crashes or is rebooted. I need to have my phone always available and having it in a restore loop when I'm away from the computer is a huge problem.
Here is my iPhone spec:
3GS in Canada, bought on the first day of release - thus it has the older bootrom (serial number 87924...)
Currently at OS 3.1.2
Modem firmware 05.11.07
Rogers with 6GB plan -- GREAT for tethering (officially allowed in Canada)
Back in the purplera1n days, I got my iBSS and iBEC files, and I know my ECID. I DO NOT HAVE the SHSH file for 3.1.2 or any other version (I was away from the 'scene' for the 3GS).
Using a Mac
I've already modified my hosts file to point to Saurik's server but just did it tonight. Not sure if this does anything right now since I don't have my 3.1.2 SHS and haven't restored the iPhone since upgrading to 3.1.2.
Here is what I think I know as of right now:
1. I CANNOT restore my iPhone back to OS 3.1.2 in case things go bad since I have not backed up my SHSH file on 3.1.2
2. I downloaded the Umbrella tool and typed in my ECID and confirmed I could not get an SHSH file for 3.1.2, but I got one from Apple for 3.1.3, then clicked "Saurik - Cydia" and 3.1.3 and it got one! I've not installed 3.1.3 on my iPhone nor have I ever done anything with Cydia with my 3GS
3. Pwnage Tool 3.1.5 will jailbreak OS 3.1.3
Here are my questions:
1. IF I jailbreak using Pwnage Tool, must I use firmware 3.1.3? As I understand it I cannot restore 3.1.2 (custom or Apple) since Apple is no longer signing these, and I DON'T have the SHSH files for 3.1.2
2. If I jailbreak using 3.1.3, will my modem firmware stay at 05.11.07? Is this reliably unlockable using ?Blackrain?
3. If I need to reset my iPhone on the road (I recall my prior jailbroken iPhones would sometimes be unstable), will it be stuck in "restore mode" until I tether it to a computer (so called tethered jailbreak)? Since mine is a very early 3GS, I thought I might NOT have this problem -- is this correct?
4. I read sometimes blackrain will corrupt your baseband and there are elaborate ways to restore it to 05.11.07 -- is this still a problem? Remember I don't have the SHSH for 3.1.2.
5. IS my SHSH on Cydia after using the Umbrella tool and clicking "Saurik - Cydia" ? (I don't want to jailbreak now just to get the 3.1.3 SHSH to Cydia since I can't step back to the official 3.1.2 after jailbreaking)
Thanks!
