Hi. I understand that you're suppose to have a data plan for you iPhone. But I have scoured the internet and have found ways of getting around this requirement by switching the iPhone's sim card to an old phone, then call Cingular and say my iPhone is broken or something and request to cancel the data plan all together and disabling any data transfers, leaving the sim card with just the calling. I then use a method which I found on the internet to not allow any internet data usage on my iPhone to be sent or received, then place the sim back card in from the old phone to the iPhone. Would this method leave me with an iPhone with no data? Since my iPhone can no longer broadcast any data, I won't be charged on it.

I have read that they send emails or texts stating that I need to switch. That doesn't really bother me. I have read that many people have been off the data for months. But maybe things have updated.

I have read that some people are forced a regular $30 plan if they are using an incorrect data plan. But I am not using an incorrect data plan, I'm using no plan. I haven't heard of anybody who has been forced the $30 plan after performing this methord. How many of you guys have heard of people performing my method and then still being forced the data plan?

As for my upgrade question. I have a family plan. I am the main user and they're charging me $50. I have 2 other users under me each are $10 each. How straight forward would my upgrade be after I disable the data from my iPhone? Would I still be paying around $50?

Thank you for your time.

Here's my experience with upgrading in a family plan. I used one of the family lines and upgraded to iphone and after 30days I called and canceled the data plan with some lame excuse that I lost the iphone. I'm still paying the same amount as before I upgraded.

I'm not sure about the whole data block deal because I'm on Tmobile with prepaid sidekick right now. But I do have friends that are using iphone without data plan and so far no penalty.

Also after you canceled you data plan, make sure you call ATT to get your regular voicemail back.

Are you planning on keeping your phone in airplane mode all the time? No? Then you'll need the data plan. While you may not be actively using the data, your phone does background processes that use data. Without the data plan, you will be charged by the KB. That's expensive.
The people who do ditch the data plan find that, eventually, AT&T discovers what they're doing. Hours after you put the SIM into your phone, it registers on AT&T's network under your account.
If all you want is the phone and pod functions, do the pay as you go SIM trick. It'd be a lot less worrisome and you don't have to worry about AT&T discovering your trick.

I see I see. Thanks for the example! I'm gaining hope.

I don't know if you have read my whole post, but like I said. I have found a method of disabling data transfer from the iPhone, where no data can be sent or received even with background processes, so I won't be charged any KB.

I'll still be interested in listening to your "pay as you go Sim trick." But I think it would be a lot easier to follow the Spick and my plan, since Spick said he was paying the same as he always did. But with a T-mobile it may be a bit different.

If you installed a fake APN then you're good.
No matter what you try to acess it will not use carrier data, just wifi.
Many people are doing what you did so I dont think you'll have any problems. If you get any messages from AT&T just ignored them.
Dont listen to what misinformed individuals will tell you that they will automaticly charge you for a data plan or whatever. Thats false.
