Does anyone know how to get rid of that ugly notification center icon on the menu bar? I like notification center so I don't want to disable it, but I just feel the icon is a waste of space since I can just swipe to get to it.

I don't see why they didn't just combine spotlight and notification center. Command+Spc would then bring it up.

This is just like when Spotlight was launched in Tiger. Bottom line there is very little chance its going away. I suggest you start getting used to it.

I just set privacy to everything in spotlight then entered this in terminal:
sudo chmod 600 /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle/Contents/MacOS/Search

followed by password then:
killall SystemUIServer

No more Spotlight or icon.
Hopefully I can do the same to the notification icon, except keep functionality from the trackpad.

Let us know if you could find it, keeping trackpad functionality. ;)

I prefer to go to the application itself to do whatever it is I need to do. When doing things is Spotlight it seems like it takes me more time. But that's just me.

Someone on some other forum (way to be vague :) ) ... Metioned http://www.macbartender.com/ ... It's still beta but it should work ... I haven't tested it myself though.

It kind of works. I just downloaded it. Had to restart and add it to the application folder before the program would work. Removes the notification center icon, but adds another. There may be a way to hide them all together.. I'll play with it more and update.

Yeah you can add the notification center icon to it then set it to hide. Only downside is you're running a program to hide an icon.

Too bad I can't have this program hold normal apps (it only does menu bar ones), I only have 2 apps and 2 folders in my dock, would be nice to have them all on the menu bar and not use the dock..

Maybe you can request this feature with the makers? Since it still beta, who knows :)

Well the idea here is say if you have 10 menu bar apps you can consolidate them into one. I just want to add my two apps and two folders onto the menu bar. Looking into it again..so far found this program called XMenu, hopeful..

Nice find. Works perfectly for me, didn't even require a restart. Now if I could just find a way to resurrect all-apps expose, I'd be a happy camper. Oh, and for those concerned about hiding an icon with an icon, there's an option to not display the bartender icon at all. Under preferences, go to advanced and uncheck the box next to "Bartender Menu Bar Icon: [] Visible".
