I'm sure that you folks get this kind of thread often, so... here's another one!

I'm a cartoonist who has always dreamed of a job in graphic novels. After spending some time in the field I've learned that unless you are lucky and in Europe you are pretty much screwed. I've given up on making graphic novels as my career and am willing to do it on the side.

I want to draw and create visual art. I'm almost obsessed with it - I've been creating since toddlerhood and can't stop looking at shapes, colors, lines, etc. I know from three attempts at becoming a professional in anything BUT art would lead to a miserable life.

Here's the thing - how do I get stated? This much I know:

I need a huge portfolio showing a vast array of examples
I need to by fluent in all the top programs at their most recent editions, particularly Photoshop and Corel
I need some sort of degree in graphic design(I already have a BA in English - completely useless)

After that, I'm stumped.

This whole issue reminds me of the South Park underpants gnomes. You know, they understand steps one and three, but how they turn their skills into profit is a mystery.

Any help?

As an independent iOS developer, I know there is always the needs for art assets in apps/games. Maybe you can start there and build your portfolio.

Comics and cartooning still are largely old school. Hand drawn and then scanned and colored in PhotoShop. That put aside, you need true dedication and a unique vision of your characters to manage a living in what you suggest. When I grew up comics were at every corner store by the rack and now there are just a few specialized outlets in the larger cities.

Good luck.
