The title says it all: it seems that the Preview app has been changed so that it always opens pdfs as new windows. For my work, I sometimes have to have dozens of pdfs open. Having to go to click "merge windows" every single time is extremely annoying, making this "update" entirely counterproductive. Would anyone know any workaround to fix this? Would be much appreciated.

(Then again, Tahoe seems to be worse than Sequoia in many other ways as well, so in a way this seems to be in line with the overall picture.)

Reactions: whatnot
I'm on sequoia, so unless they removed it, in desktop & dock settings, under 'windows', you could try setting 'prefer tabs when opening docs' to always? don't know what else it will do, but seems to bundle my pdfs in preview.

ed: tahoe advice seems to follow the above, but I'm in no position to confirm.

Fascinating to hear about this minutia; you're right – even that system-level setting doesn't seem to convince Preview in Tahoe to open documents in tabs rather than windows.

For perspective, I was just in this conversation where separate windows is what the person wanted. You'd think they'd have been delighted by this version, but they illustrated there was even a low and seemingly arbitrary limit on the number of windows!

I always encourage people to send feedback about stuff like this – and, yes, I feel like I've been doing an unusual lot of encouraging this fall.
