Getting Unicode Support

I'm wanting to view Hindi (Devanagari) websites and also got some Hindi e-mails on my iPhone. But I can't see the text. My understanding is that the iPhone is based on OSX which supports unicode. I've also heard rumors that the reason that Hindi doesn't work is simply that the font wasn't included on the iPhone.

Is there anyway to put the font on the phone? Anybody have any ideas about how to go about it?

You could FTP into the phone, from there you can install the fonts and it may work. Not sure if just having the right font will work.

Yeah, I'm not sure if it would work either, but that is why somebody has to try it! I'm going to rely on that they didn't remove just part of the unicode support from the OS and Safari.

So do you have any good tips on how to FTP into the phone? I did a google and found quite a few sites, but I'm not sure which is best and least risky?

So that renewed my interested in trying to get Devanagari onto my phone.

The tutorials I found all required downloads of programs that seem to only be for Intel macs. I have an old PowerBook G4 so those won't work.

Anybody have advice on a good tutorial/approach to getting a font onto my iPhone?

The only way that I can think of is FTP. Go here first:

Download installer.app and install it.

Then go here:

BUT you only have to install the BSD subsystem and OpenSSH, not the launcher and mobile finder.

Buy the way, once you have installer.app installed you are gonna have TONS of fun once you see all the programs and games that are not out for the phone!!!!

If you install more than a few (4) you will want to install Summerboard first so you can scroll the springboard and see all the app icons.

But back to the fonts. Once you can SFTP into the phone, locate the fonts folder and try copying the desired fonts over and see what happens!

Okay, after a couple of tries I got installer working. Step 3 in that thread is a bit problematic. Where do I get BSD and OpenSHH to install on my phone?

I take it those are what is required to "answer" when CyberDuck comes ringing?

Aha, first install the Community resources, then install from that list. You would think people making the instructions would include those things.

Well, I figured it out. Was able to move over the Devanagari font. But it doesn't seem to work. Oh well. That is sad.
