Is there an easy way to do this without "jail breaking"?

I downloaded the ipsw file and opened it with sn0wbreeze, chose preserve baseband only, and now I have the custom ipsw on my desktop.

Can I just plug my phone into iTunes, and shift-click/alt-click update and choose that and have it work?

It says it will update and verify with apple, I'm just worried that I might mess it up.

I already almost messed up my phone earlier today when I got it stuck in recovery mode so I want to be extra careful, I can't live without a phone abroad.

I did it yesterday.

I created a custom IPSW using redsn0w. So that way i can preserve my baseband.

Then I enter "pwned DFU" mode via redsn0w and restore in iTunes using custom firmware i created.

And that's what i did! Gevey sim works great on iOS 5.

So did you jailbreak or just preserve baseband? Is it untethered?

Also should I recreate my ipsw in redsn0w? I used sn0wbreeze.

Then enter owned DFU in redsn0w..

Alt-click restore from the ipsw I created??

Thanks
