Other GF wants to switch to IPhone for the first time after 5 years with the Galaxy S8. Any personal recommendations for someone first switching over?

13 mini for sure! It’s an absolutely excellent little device, I can’t see myself upgrading or changing until another mini model is released.

I almost forgot about the mini, I'll take her to an Apple store now so she can try it out and see if she likes it. Good suggestion. I almost grabbed one of those as well. I still have my 5s and I love the size.
You think they're ever going to go back to the mini? I feel like Apple's going to leave that in the dust.
And hey I'm 6' as well and I still love my 5s. I daily the 14PM, but if I could have it in the form factor of the mini I would love that.
Yeah, I even tried out a 14 Pro and it just wasn’t for me—from the display to the weight. It went rick back in its box and back to T-mobile. Just made me appreciate how good I already have it with the mini, tbh.
As for a future mini, it’s hard to say. Outlook doesn’t seem so good but you never know, really. Some people seem to be wishing for minis and Pluses being released on an alternated schedule every other year, which could maybe work. I don’t know, but I choose to remain optimistic. And if it doesn’t pan out, well, I’m sure this phone will be solid for years to come.
I had a 5 as my first iPhone in 2012, and then a first-gen SE after owning and (and not loving) a 6. The SE and 13 mini are probably my most-favorite iPhones I’ve owned; there’s just something special about a capable device in a more compact form-factor.
Someday, perhaps, but there’s almost certainly nothing on the short term roadmap. Reliable rumors say even the SE will be getting XR-sized. Pick up a new (or even refurbished—nothing wrong with those) 13 mini and you’ll both be pleased as punch. Think of all the iMessage fun you’ll finally have!

Have you warned her that she will be inconsolably disappointed that Apple doesn't double the speed, storage, & camera resolution, AND drop the price of their iPhones every year?

Seriously -- all of the iPhones are magical. She'll love anything she gets. And don't worry about the size as much. My mother has tiny hands and she just upgraded to a 14...and has no problems. I would just stay away from the plus/max sizes.
Most importantly...enjoy. There's nothing like the feeling of getting new hardware!

It is best to keep them on ancient hardware so they can't use the 'Find My Phone' feature.😜
