Hi there!

I’m looking to upgrade the gpu in my 2010 5,1 Mac Pro from the stock HD 5770 (I think it is).

I’m looking at picking up a Sapphire Pulse RX570 8gb. This card has 2 x DP and 2 x HDMI. The card has 1 x 8 pin power connector. I think it used <180W of power.

Will this be compatible with the max pro. I’m worried about the power consumption and whether this unit will fry the computer eventually or fit properly.

Does anyone have experience with this unit or know if there are any issues with it.

I’ve added pics from the seller to help identify the card.

Thanks heaps!

Though it's not mentioned in the first post (wiki post), it is mentioned numerous times to be used and working in the thread posts later. So yes, it should be good to go with it, at least if it is with stock firmware.
GPU Compatibility List for cMP

You'll need mini dual 6-pin to 8-pin adapter cable (or dual mini 6-pin to 8-pin), whichever is the right word for it). Your second PCIe slot might be tight to fit cards with that GPU, but it's possible, and you'd want consider about cooling of those cards if you do so. And be sure the fans don't touch slot 2 card.

Please make sure too you have Mac Pro firmware and OS new enough to use that card. Source for that information can be learned from the same thread linked above, AND some usefull bootROM info in another thread if interested and/or needed. Or maybe you have studied all of it already.
MacPro5,1: BootROM thread | 144.0.0.0.0

Good luck with updating 🛠️.

Thank you so much for your quick reply. I appreciate your reassuring post! I’ve just seen so many reports or small gotchas with some cards and wanted to be 100% certain that I won’t fry my cheese grater beauty!

I am currently on 10.13.6 with bottom 144.0.0.0.0. This machine was on Mojave from its previous owner and I then downgraded it when I purchased it as it didn’t come with a metal 2 gfx cars. That was a few years ago now and gpu prices are coming down again so time to upgrade.

I’m under the impression that 10.13.6 has drivers for this card. For boot screens I’ll need to install open core. That will also get me gpu media acceleration if I understand correctly.

I have a power cable adaptor coming with the card too from the seller.

So I plan to put the card in and run my system as usual.

Then I plan to do a test run of open core and then fully migrate to open core.

Hopefully that all sounds about right!

Again, thank you for the speedy reply :):)

I have used the Sapphire Pulse 580 for long time and it is working well, but I don’t know the 570 is also working well.

Hi team, I have just received my new GFX card which is different to the one in the photo.

It is a Sapphire Pulse RX570 8gb with 1 x DP, 1 X HDMI, 1 x DVI this card has a single 6pin power connector.

My question is:

Can I use the current single 6 pin power connector in my Mac Pro that goes to the HD5770?

or

Do I need to get a dual mini 6 pin to single 6 pin connector to power this card?

I really don’t want to damage anything and I am extremely noob to GFX card things. I have attached some photos from the seller if that’s helps identify the card.

I really appreciate your help! Thanks a bunch.

If there is only one 6-pin connector on the card, then you should be fine with mini 6-pin to 6-pin with that.

If the card have a 6 pin you only need a mini 6-pin to 6-pin cable

This is my old 580, with this 8-pin connector you need a 2x 6pin to 8-pin cable.

Thanks for the replies team, I’ll install it this afternoon!

Next steps will be installing OCLP on my 10.13.6 install then upgrade to 10.14. I already have the correct bootrom as this machine has previously run 10.14 from a previous owner.

Am I able to I stall oclp alongside and existing macOS install or does it need to be fresh install? I think I have dosdude patches installed from my old 3,1 mac pro, would that interfere?

I’ve had this system image running since the first intel mbp 15” in 2007 and would kinda like to keep it going :p

Not that one, but you need a dual mini 6pin to single 8pin

Yes, should be plug and play if you power it correctly.

Thanks for you reply. Just wondering if you saw that I got a different card, one that’s has a 6 pin connector, not an 8 pin.

Do I need to get 2x 6 pin mini -> 8 pin -> 6 pin

Or

Can I go 6pin mini -> 6 pin like the card in my Mac Pro that it shipped with.

If it's any indication, I have an MSI RX 570 with slightly lower boost clock than yours (according to Techpowerup). Rated the same TDP.
With only one power cable, my MacPro5,1 emergency shuts off when the GPU is under full load.
With a dual cable not anymore.

Oh, I missed that one. If just one single 6pin on the card, then your existing cable is fine.

It’s not just how much pins, or TDP, but also how the card draws power.

If the card is programmed to draw more than 120W from the 8pin, and only 30W from the slot. Then it can trigger the shutdown protection if you only power it by a single mini 6pin.

In OP’s case, if the card only has single 6pin. There is no way the card was programmed to draw that much power from the 6pin, but will fully utilise both the slot and 6pins power.
