I'm buying a new phone for someone as a gift. This person installs and services HVAC systems, and will use the phone for taking pics on the job, making calls, etc. It'll get grimy, and based on what I've heard, it'll get dropped a lot.

I've narrowed it down to either a 7+ or 8+. From what I've seen online, the glass back of the 8+ tends to shatter more easily than the front, even when in a case. I plan on getting him a rugged case for it, but still. The 7+ has an aluminum back, so the back wouldn't be a concern there. I'm leaning towards the 7+ for this reason, but do you guys have any input? Is the worry over the glass back of the 8+ overblown? I feel weird giving him a 2 year old phone, but hardware-wise, the 7+ and 8+ aren't that different.

(The X and its ilk are out of the question for a number of reasons, sorry.)

Thanks!

The 8 plus is also heavier than the 7 plus. That can be another selling point.
If the glass back of the 8 plus cracks, that's an extremely expensive repair.
When the 8 plus came out, most 7 plus owners didn't upgrade to it because it was deemed that the improvements weren't that significant.

You can compare both phone specs at the link below:

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the 7+ already. I guess I was wondering if there were people who have the 8+ who've dropped it plenty and haven't had any problems.

Anything can happen. If you wanna get the 8+ just grab a rugged case that can take some drops.

If you’re worried about drops 7+ all the way

Aluminum will outdo back glass

The 8+ feels too beefy to me too. It’s just heavy enough to not like it. The 7plus is good weight for its size it feels lighter than my x in terms of surface area even tho it’s a little heavier

Yeah, I was going to get a rugged case regardless, but I've seen online that the 8+ back can shatter inside a case too.

All right, I think it's gonna be the 7+, thx everyone.

I’d get the 8 plus just because it’s newer, in a good case it won’t matter about dropping it anyways.Im a service tech so I use my phone for the same things

I would get 8+ and a good case. 8+ has same internals as X so should last longer. Better performance, wireless charging, etc
