Gigabit Link?

I just installed a new gigabit switch, but according to system profile it says this

Ethernet:
MAC Address: 00:16:cb:xx:xx:xx
Media Options: Full Duplex, flow-control
Media Subtype: 100baseTX

I am runnign Cat5e that i made myself, but tested and all 8 pairs are good. Anything else i need to do?

Fixed. I forgot i had a 5 port switch behind my desk. Got rid of it and plug right into the new switch. 1000mbps :-D

I didnt find much of a difference between 1Gig and 100meg at home.. (when I changed my switch, etc)... hrmmm

I do a decent amount of fille transfer between my file server and my PC so i hope its worth it.

setup an FTP daemon on one of your machines, then xfer some files from it, onto the other machine, take not of the throughput.. do it on 100 and 1gig.

It's really not that crash hot, or at least, no where near what you'd expect.

someone was trying to tell me that the PCI bus isnt fast enough to xfer 1Gb/s.. or something like that, I forget.

I have a 1gig card in my linux server, to a 1gig switch.. and my MBP (when on my desk) connected to the same switch.. it's nothing special..

well 1000 base/t is fast but you can very rarely use it. Like when I transfer files between our two xeon servers which have 10 k hard drives I get a %15 usage on the ethernet. So yes it will perform better then 100 base/t but that was with 10 k drives. Most people have 7200s So in most cases it does not help much at all. But when it is a cable that takes a large amount of data for example we have 2 cat5e cables connecting the two sections of our building as a back bone these are both 1000 base/t and they are steady %40 for each cable. We can't afford fiber channels so 1000 base/t will have to do.
