I have a 3.1 mac pro with a ATI 4870 1GB that I flashed 4 years ago. I read a lot of recent threads about how the new systems had drivers for the ATI and GTX cards. I don't need the log in screen so I gave the Gigabyte 7950 3GB a go. It seems to work ok, though I needed a 6 to 8 pin connector. I got a kernal panic after a few hours that required a restart and was a huge pain in the ass. Temps were in the 95f range.....

My question is, how do I find a great card that will drive a modern display that won't cause these problems. I've read all the threads here....the irritating part others have reported no problem with the same card.

I'm looking to ugrade this computer to last another 2 to 3 years and need some graphic horsepower.

Any help will be appreciated.

I reinstalled my 4870, and very rarely would it restart and have a log available. OS 10.8.3, the card was not flashed.

KP log should be available in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports or in Console under Files//Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

Thanks, here it is...

KP wasn't card related IMO.
Machine check with uncorrected errors usually points on RAM.

Perform AHT or ASD, check Memory in System Profiler for ECC errors (but do it after few hours of working - single bit errors are cleared on reboot).
Check LEDs on memory risers.

Which Gigabyte card do you have? All the designs I've seen from them are the C381 reference design with 2x6 power connectors (yes there is more than one reference design).

1) Try going back to the 4870 and see if the problem exists. If the 7950 is drawing too much power for your MP Power Supply, it could cause an issue with RAM/CPU not getting the power it needs.
2) Could also be a sign that your MP power supply is getting tired.
3) Lastly - when I had a 2008MP, some OWC ram I had failed after a year and had to be replaced. The RAM was no longer recognized.

Best luck

Hmm, I appreciate all the information. I put the 4870 back in and have had no problems at all. I reseated all the memory before pulling the 7950 to make sure they weren't the problem. I have had that happen before and re-seat fixed it.

The Gigabyte card is GV-R795WF3-3GD, it had one 6 pin and one 8 pin, I used an adapter.

I'm going to return it and try a GTX 680. I wasn't getting the performance increase I was hoping for. Though to be fair I need to add more RAM....I'm really interesting in playing Wow and similar games and for the connections when this 23" ACD goes (which may be soon...its all pink around the edges).

Again thanks for all the information and I'm open to any ideas.

Update.

The problem was actually the RAM. The original 2G have finally failed and are not recognized regardless where in the riser they reside. I guess they were beginning to fail and set off the panics. Now that they are completely dead they no longer cause them. So I've ordered more memory and can put the 7950 back in.

Thanks for all of your help in the diagnosis.
