Given 17" MacBooks, are 15" ones overpriced?

I pre-ordered the 1.83 macbook the day they were announced. However, I was still wishing for two things:
- Bigger screen (17"?)
- Dual layer 8x superdrive

But, these weren't big enough things to bother me. Now, however, AppleInsider is predicting that we are going to see 17" versions of the laptop sometime between April and June.

So, the question is: when these new version(s) come out, will the existing macbook configurations drop down to $2000 range, with the crown $2499 spot being held by the 17" version? Or are the existing price specifications going to remain consistent over the course of the year, with 17" closer to $3000?

That would be the very reason why I wouldn't bother with Apple. While they are making great strides to improve their products, they are also making great strides to ensure that they aren't affordable to the average consumer.

I hope they drop the prices with the introduction of the 17" model. It'd gonna be about $5000 here if they don't.

I honestly don't see the 17" model until WWDC with a full MacBook Pro rev at the same time to introduce the 17" and 13" models.

Do you foresee a new form factor with that rev?

The only thing that does hold me back right now is..
1) It's not Merom
2) Eww, that old case! Dings so easily.

The MacBook Pro is not a machine for the average consumer. Your argument is moot. The computers for "average consumers," the iMac, iBook and Mac mini are very affordable and, when similarly specced, compare well with the competition.

This PB was $3k when I got it so it wouldn't surprise me if the first revision of the 17" MBP was the same price. They'll probably drop prices on all of them after a revision or two, if what they did with PBs was any indication.

The prices will certainly drop on the 15" in the future, but not with the introduction of the 17". My original 17" PB cost me GBP 2,500 when I reflect on the fact that I paid that much for it I am shocked...

I don't really think the 17" makes the 15" overpriced at all. The 17" will just be... really expensive.

I have to say, that although I might cringe when I submit my orders....I don't really think the MB Pro is that overpriced. When comparing it to other laptop manufacturers, their top of the line laptops start at a little over $3000. And you can get a MB Pro full loaded for about that price (atleast with the student discount). And these are the top of the line notebooks from apple, just be happy you don't have a dozen different models to compare that look ass ugly.
