Given a replacement iPad... is it a refurb?

A few days ago, I noticed a deep scratch in my iPad screen. After going to the Apple Store, they replaced it with a "new" one for $299 (which was completely covered by AppleCare) Do you think this "new" iPad was a refurbished one or a completely new device?

Not quite sure. I do remember there being the adhesive screen on the iPad but it definitely was not in the box that came with the iPad if that's what you're inferring. How do the two boxes differ?
 
You may not even be able to tell the difference, actually. Plus, the refurbs come with the same warranty as brand new items, so it really doesn't matter.
 
Ive posted on this once before look it up. How many ipads do you think have been returned or replaced, enough to send multiple refurbs to all apple stores everywhere the iPad is sold? Right now especially because the iPad is so new, apple is sending brand new " brown box" ipads to give to customers until the stock of them for refurbs rises. You may have got a refurb but I doubt it right now. However, mine came out of a new iPad box, although they wouldn't let me keep the box, because they were out of brown box.
 
A refurbished item is always a good replacement - it has been examined with a fine-tooth comb to ensure it is as close to perfect as possible, so chances are it will last longer than the average new item.

do you guys asking for a new one like in retail packaging?

remember, you are not returning the ipad with your box...

This is true. In actuality, I really don't mind if it is a refurb but anythings better than having a scratched screen!

I wonder if the serial number could indicate a refurbed/new iPad.

If it was completely covered then why did you have to pay $299.00? What am I missing here?

Nope. I walked out of there with a new (or maybe refurbed) iPad for $0. Cost me nothing.

They looked at the scratch and identified that it needed to be replaced. On the receipt it says $299, but on the Repair sheet it says Paid: $0.00
 
Got mine replaced two weeks ago. Starts with 'AK,' last one was GB so I don't if this one is a refurb or not, genius stated it was a brand new one. Question, since the iPad launched has it always said on the back "complies with the Canadian..etc.."..I just don't remember it having all that on my previous iPad. Seems like that serial number was shifted as well.
